QJ got an initiation into the NFL last night. They don't hit that hard in the Big 12. QJ has to decide now if he really wants to play at this level. He's not playing against Texas Tech and the University of Houston anymore.
Rumor has it that Kellen Moore is responsible for the QJ pick, based on what somebody said in some podcast. Don't fall for it. That is not what the writer of the below piece says. Chargers coaching staff and management have had their eyes on QJ for quite some time, long before Kellen Moore was involved.
It all starts with Chargers scout Tyler Lyon. He scouted prospects in the area surrounding Johnston for players that were expected to declare as well as those who were between one and two years off from doing such.
He kept tabs on Johnston starting from his freshman year with the Horned Frogs. Over time, several other members of the Chargers staff kept just as close of an eye on Johnston and were equally as bought into him to the point it's easy to get the sense there was no other option for the team at the spot they drafted him from.
The Chargers were impressed by what Johnston brought to the table both from a tangibles and an intangibles perspective. Johnston's yards-after-catch ability was mentioned as a specific reason as to why Los Angeles selected him.
"He's big, strong and fast. That's a good way to start it off as a player," Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said of Johnston after the first round of the draft. "Great work ethic that we love. We know all these players that are drafted, they're all talented. But once they get in this league, it takes a lot of work to get to where you want to go and keep improving.
"He has some physical characteristics that we think he can add to our offense in a different role," Telesco continued. "We're trying to give Justin [Herbert], our whole offense and [Offensive Coordinator] Kellen Moore a lot of different styles of players to use in different situations. We think he can fit that."
Some believe Addison and Flowers were the more polished, NFL-ready prospects, and were surprised at the move, especially considering the ties Addison already had to the Chargers coaching staff.

Kincaid had 5 catches for 34 yards yesterday which arent big numbers but he has stepped it up big time since the start of the season and now has 58 receptions. Allen was sacked just once and they rushed for 173 yards so the concern for his blocking was not warranted imo.
He is adequate and is more a weapon which we dont have. I like Everett but he doesnt get many targets for some reason. If we had Kincaid, id bet he would be used more in the passing game.
He was my pick but after him i liked Flowers.

Josh Palmer was the 77th pick in the 2021 draft, the 11th WR picked. 33receptions/353yds 4TD 67.3% completion. He was the No. 3 WR all season behind Keenan Allen and Mike Williams, who both played in 16 of 17 games that year. Palmer's rookie opportunities were limited because of two more experienced WRs in front of him.
QJ started out 2023 as the 4th WR. Then Mike Will went down in week 3 and he became the 3rd WR. Then Josh Palmer went on IR, and he became the 2nd WR. As a rookie, QJ has much more opportunity than Palmer did, but so far he has not been as NFL ready as Palmer, who was never higher than the No. 3 WR as a rookie. Palmer played 38% of offensive snaps his rookie season. QJ has played 53% this season.
QJ has a high ceiling. It's too early to come to any conclusion about him. But he's not NFL ready right now. That's OK. Mike Will and Vincent Jackson were not NFL ready as rookies. Keenan is the only WR in recent memory who was NFL ready as a rookie. Mike Williams was a borderline bust as a rookie in 2017, but six years later he is the best WR drafted in the 1st round that year, and it's not even close. Cooper Kupp and Chris Godwin were 3rd round picks in 2017 and they are the 1st and 2nd best WRs in that draft. Mike Will and JuJu Smith-Schuster (2nd rnd) have about the same production, and are tied more or less as the 3rd best WR drafted in 2017. Mike Will's production is not that far behind Godwin even.
Vincent Jackson was the 11th WR drafted in 2005, 2nd rnd, #61. VJ was far from being NFL ready. It took three seasons for him to fully emerge. But he turned out to be the 2nd best WR taken in the draft. Only Roddy White, #27 overall, produced more yards and scores than VJ over his career, and it wasn't by a whole lot. Braylon Edwards was the #3 pick and 1st WR drafted in 2005. And while he had a very good career and was a Pro Bowler in 2007, White and VJ were superior to Edwards over the course of their careers.
In a couple of seasons, Palmer and QJ may very well be one of the best WR duos in the league. Palmer is such a hard worker and like a sponge soaking up knowledge from Keenan. And QJ may just need some time like both VJ and MW needed.

Just stop. Palmer is NEVER going to be anything other than an AVERAGE WR2. It really seems that the lack of an explosive athlete on the field for the Chargers' offense for years has warped fans' expectations.
People cling to Guyton and T Billy.....It's honestly pathetic. These are PRACTICE SQUAD level guys or WR4 on real teams. Notice how Deandre Carter barely gets WR snaps for the Raiders he has SIX total targets this year.
You can't fill the field with anything but average(by NFL standards) athletes and accomplish much.
