    the other thing I recall is that the above 3 guys happened to be the top (or runner up) best FA available at their respective positions when they got signed. There was nobody else on the market who was clearly higher rated for a similar price to replace those guys with- and they were critical positions for us at the time. Some of us may have had some little doubts if the guys would maintain their high level of play (although with Butler it was flashes sandwiched between injuries) after they got big contracts, but we had to assume management knew these guys well from time already on the team and decided it was a risk that needed to be taken in each case.
