A fair number of college LB have made the transition to S. Darren Woodson is the name that comes to mind, but he is not the only one. It probably will take a year or two to be complete, but that doesn't mean that they can't be situational guys while they are learning to do the whole thing. Woodson was a nickle LB for Dallas his rookie year, and played a lot of downs. He took over by his 2nd season, and then up until he hung it up.
A lot will depend how long it takes him to learn how to cover. It is acutally easier sometimes, just because it will be totally different and won't have as many bad habits to unlearn as if he was trying to refine his pass drops as a regular LB.
