I'm not necessarily saying he lied about it, but with gambling now legal and this officiating crew already screwing up another high-profile game, the optics are awful.

Agreed. I don't believe games are fixed, but a lot of people do, or they might have suspicions, and this type of blunder just fuels those suspicions. The ref should be suspended IMO.

If the ref did not hear the player report (if in fact, he did report) I'm not sure how it's on him to get it right. Everything about the end of that game sucked.

They don't always announce when an OL reports as eligible. Some times they just inform the DL on the other team, which the ref said he did in this case. I am confused too why sometimes they announce and sometimes they don't.

That will be Goodell's out that it has to be announced going forward. That may have prevented the confusion.

But as far as that ref goes, knowing you're already in the public eye after the Chiefs-Packers debacle, you'd think he might want to double down on staying out of the spotlight in the future. And if Campbell walked the crew through this play before the game -- and apparently most good coaches do this to avoid confusion if/when the play is called -- then there still is no excuse. He knew it might be coming and he still screwed it up. The guy clearly is not suited to be an NFL referee, much less are some on his crew.

This is now entering the ridiculous. Allen the ref claims one guy reported, the other didn't. The guy the ref claims that he reported says he didn't, says the other guy did.

In the video it sure looked like the ref nodded to 68 after he reported but without audio, who knows. All i know is it sure seems really hard these days for the refs to call a good game.

Maybe too many rules altho I’m not sure that’s on Goodell. It does look like the ref nodded to 68 and 70 was 5-10 yards away. I think he just screwed up but Campbell said he explained to the ref that they might try this before the game. Believing it most favorably the guy just forgot what Campbell said over the course of the game and made a mistake. Otherwise he intentionally screwed the Lions and that takes us down a dark tunnel
