The problem is that he freelances and uses bad technique a lot. He allows a lot of bad plays. Subtract the bad plays from the plays he makes, he is not nearly as attractive of an option as some backup caliber guys. The catch is that while the backups can't make the big plays, there are a lot of guys with less talent who don't give up the big plays against us. Overall, we would come out ahead. Sometimes the biggest plays a guy makes are the ones he doesn't allow. Liuget allows quite a few.
If you look at his contract, (http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/san-diego.../corey-liuget/), it looks like we have given him until the end of this season to get his head screwed on. After this season, we can dump him and not take too big a cap hit. It gets better each year after that.
At some point Liuget needs to start producing. He is a lot like Butler, in that he is often in position to make a lot of plays, yet somehow finds ways to leave them on the field. I love the guy's work ethic. He always seems like he is making a major effort to improve his game off the field, which is something I like to see. But eventually, all the hard work is meaningless if you don't produce. Liuget can be the best 3 technique DT in football, but he isn't and it is getting old waiting for him to step up every season.
He is not nearly as bad as Reyes was, but he is also not playing so well that he has proven he is the answer either. Right now, he is still getting the node because of his potential, not his production.
