    WHERE?

2001 Chargers 5-11 missed the playoffs

    2002/03 Dolphins 9-7 and 10 - 6 missed the playoffs

    2006 49'ers 7-9 missed the playoffs

2013 Cleveland Browns 4-12 missed the playoffs

2014 Vikings 7-9 missed playoffs, 2015 Vikings 11-5 LOST WILDCARD, 2016 Vikings 8-8 missed playoffs

2018 Carolina Panthers 7-9 missed playoffs, 2019 Carolina Panthers 5-11 missed playoffs

See a trend here???? Missed the playoffs in every year he was an OC minus 1!!! The numbers don't lie... He got his jobs based off Superbowls in the 90's and BRIEF success with Marty's team in San Diego. Norv Turner is woefully overrated as a HC AND OC.

there is more, but I see a similar story. first, Norv >>> Staley, I'm not calling them the same. But Norv's offense in DAL was great with 5 HOF players on the field. When he first got here, his offense was also great with 3 HOF players plus a couple pro-bowl-margins guys like Dielman, McNeil. When the roster reduced in quality, LT aged/gone, McNeil early retire, etc - his offense failed miserably and laid an egg.

      The answers could be

      a) no coach could win with that later roster (thats what he said on exit)
      b) He uniquely could win with the DAL and early SDC rosters
      c) any decent coach could win with the DAL and early SDC rosters

I lean towards a lot of a and more c than b only because he never succeeded on offense any time he didn't have multiple HOF players.

there is more to a team's record than Norv, especially if he was only the OC. He also had a run of division titles and playoff wins with the chargers. yes, he was more successful when he had good players, but that is true for any coach. if you base Doug Pederson's success on his time with the Jaguars, he is a loser. if you base it on his time with the Eagles, he is a super bowl champ.

i am also basing my opinion on watching games he was coaching in. I thought he had a good feel for play calling.

we obviously have a different take on Norv, I am fine to agree to disagree. It's all in the past now.

all fair points, but i don't think this adds up to "Norv sucked." I just don't see it. I watched the games. There are plenty of guys better, but I put him at above average.

Obviously, there are differing opinions on Norv here. I agree to disagree.

I agree he was better than the 3 coaches that followed him. He was a good solid pro coach if given a good roster. He was not a magician, not a genius. He could not turn water into wine.

Not easy being a Charger fan or coach apparently. One season and he already needs 2 surgeries

Same can be said of Marty, right? Team was loaded when he had success.

Yet fans want to put Marty on a pedestal while they come after Norv with pitchforks.

I didn't come after Norv with a pitchfork. I saw Marty take a perennial last place team and turn them into division champs in 3 different cities. I give Marty tons of credit for building winners out of losers. no, I don't say the same about Marty. but you can.
