The pass defense wasn't horrendous in 2022 because the run defense was horrendous.

Its hard to assess players when your head coach/defensive guru has his head up his ass for three years: particularly young players.
Kyle Van Noy, for most of last year played like crap ..... same as Drue Tranquil.
A brief episode where Staley lost his play toy and had to eliminate a ton of exotic stuff being the exception.
We'll watch those bums start/ play a ton of minutes on stingy defenses today.

Minter studied the Chargers defensive roster before resigning from his $3 million dollar gig at U. of Michigan: only an idiot would do otherwise.
He knows that you can't turn over an entire roster in two years, much less one.

He also knows that he's on the hot seat if we see the same crappy performances next year.
Coordinators have a short leash in the NFL.

As far as James not being explosive as when he was 22,
that's true of every 6 year vet;
they offset it by being smarter and more efficient,
James got a whole lot dumber over Staley's tenure.

We’ll have a good idea of the answer to the age old question of is it talent or coaching? They’re not gonna be able to turn over the roster entirely — altho that’s what I wanted after Jax to get the stench off — so they’ll have to add pieces through the draft, low priced FA and maybe a trade or two. But several of the players who underperformed or looked bad with Staley are going to need to improve.

I see people are already giving Staley a pass and blaming TT. SMH. Staley got what he wanted on the defensive side of the ball. JCJ was a huge whiff not only for the dead money but because they counted on him they didn’t draft the position. Staley didn’t value LBs so we may have none. We could go on.

I still have visions of Staley teaching Deanne Leonard 'cb technique' during training camp:
a position that he never played, nor coached at a high level.

Let the dbs coach do his damn job! Tell him how you want it taught (without him laughing in your face).

Or Bosa having to cover Alvin Kamara out of the backfield with the famous “what are we doing?”. I think that sums up the Staley era.

Mike Sainristil (or any other mid-round CB) would be my plan B. I don't know if you watched him in the National Championship game vs Washington... but he was very grabby in coverage. There were a number of obvious PI's he got away with. IMO, he's a zone-only kind of player. He is scrappy and physical... but I'm not sure his play style translates to the NFL. And if it does... he'll be limited in the things a DC can do with him.

If we take players Harbaugh coached in college, I would take 5 or 6 other players... starting with DT Kris Jenkins and LB Junior Colson.
Zac Zinter, Drake Nugent, Roman Wilson, Blake Corum, Michael Barrett... I like most of those guys better than Mike Sainristil.

Given that if they pass on him after Jeremiah thinks highly of him then we know he's not as good and a weird over achiever in college ball.
