Now with Hortiz and Harbaugh there will be fewer higher paid folks at the top and more intermediate salary guys spread throughout the roster meaning that they will be keeping guys that they hit on at a decent price and letting others that don't fit the culture or are getting older bring in comp picks as they go to other teams..

Hortiz is definitely wheeling and dealing right now, the Bozeman signing is particularly important, not only is Bradley experienced in the system that the new staff is installing, but he excels at what they want to do going forward which is running the football...I'm not saying that he's the center for the foreseeable future but that door is definitely open, by signing him to a low $ 1 year deal the Panthers are basically paying most of his salary for 2024 like what Pittsburg did with Wilson AND if they find their center of the future in this coming draft he walks and nets a comp pick in 2026 OR if they can't get their guy early in the draft there is still a chance that Bozeman has a bounce back year playing in the system that he enjoyed his biggest success and they can resign him in house in 2025 without upsetting the comp formula for another year or two...this move improve flexibility in the draft by allowing the chargers to perhaps draft center at a lower round where they can take their time and groom the player and get him ready to start in 2025...the center class is top heavy but there are some good prospects though the 4-5 rounds so no need to panic if the team focuses on WR, CB, EDGE, IDL or OT early...THAT'S why this signing is so key...low cost quality starter with potential to stick around further than 2024...

I thought Hortiz could've shown more patience in waiting to sign guys like Edwards and Perryman perhaps after the draft so that they wouldn't affect the compensatory picks formula, but I can't get mad at him for targeting 'his' guys especially if he felt that they would sign elsewhere before then, now they have several guys on offense that know how to play in Roman's scheme, Hurst, Bozeman, and Edwards...it's hard to put a value on that because of the effect that it will have getting everyone else up to speed...
I understand about comp picks being important but also understand Hortiz still needed to field a team and you nailed it, finding the right players for the scheme

I just looked and Kenneth Murray dropped from a 5th to a 6th because of Tyron Smith and Chase Young. That kind of stings more than losing the 6th because they signed Perryman pick which probably would have ended up being a 7th by the time all the deals are done. Like Zeitler signed today - so that might be another pick that moves somebody down a road or somebody out of comp pick territory totally.

So cutting him was not cutting points, he was unavailable to score anything. And isn't someone I would rely on to be available.
With play action and run game, even with a couple drops, QJ should be good for 8-10TDs. That replaces the unavailable MW. That points. IMV.

Allen has always been great, but never a big TD scorer or threat to take it to house. And at his age and unwilling to take a pay cut. Getting pick #110 was a great move. You are not replacing that many TDs. And although he can help move the chains to keep the drive going.
I think Palmer is a very solid route runner. Knows how to get open. And can be that possession receiver. JH and him have some chemistry already.

Ekeler not only had a down year for him but he fumbles too much. 10 over past 2 seasons. They didn't score as many points because of these turnovers. A couple goaline fumbles as well, a bit of a Melvin Gordon impression. And Ekeler is beginning to look a bit beat up at 5'8 200lbs. Gus Edwards at 6'1 238lbs will beat the other team up and wear them out in a way Ekeler never could. And will score those redzone TDs smash mouth into the end zone. That is points. IMV.

If you running it better, the play action and redzone scoring gets easier because the other team is struggling to stop the run and then TE easily leaks out for wide open TD toss in redzone.

I just don't view MW, Ekeler, Allen as losing points that are hard to find. With a better OL, run game and defense. There are many points that will be added by being better at the line of scrimmage.

When Roman said can you imagine Justin Herbert with a run game.....IMV, he was imagining play action and wide open TD passes off of that run game. POINTS. Lots of POINTS.

And let's not forget we still have one of the most physically gifted and smartest QBs in the NFL, this new set up is all about empowering Herbert so that he doesn't have to shoulder the full load, plus the process is still unfolding, I don't understand all the impatience, it's that whole sky is falling bullshit full panic mode because Keenan is gone, gimme a break, for all we know the next puka nacua is right around the corner and will be a Charger in 2024, stop dwelling in the past folks...

its a crap shoot in some ways--- plus if a player is released at some point, can really jack with it

plus, not sure a player making $4m should cross off somebody getting $8m

I don't even know why they have it -- free agency happens...

your highest gain always crosses off one of your losses, it's not a perfect system but it's better than what we had before...which was nothing, it rewards teams that legitimately develop more talent for the player pool than what they take out of it, but some teams have definitely learned how to game the system a bit, like I said, not perfect...

looking back @2021.... who would you draft.... of course most here are going to respond w/the benefit of hindsight (coz most here can't stand any vulnerability/to be wrong for god's sake), and.... maybe also consider what you/they knew before the draft.... ??

                  Penei Sewell
                  Patrick Surtain
                  DeVonta Smith
                  Micah Parsons
                  Rashawn Slater
                  Alijah Vera Tucker

off the board >> Jaylen Waddle, JaMarr Chase, Kyle Pitts

                  QBs went 1-2-3

and who would you take @11 instead ?? ....Parsons, Slater or Tucker ??

and what would you have done @5 ?? ....the RT or WR ??

similar draft in that there was a "generational" TE, a "generational" WR, two other receivers and LT Slater

there was def some debate as to whether Cincy should be prudent and draft the OT, albeit Burrows was lobbying for his homie @wideout

Ninja couldn't stand Smith as he thought injury was inevitable....

and is there a CB or ED that may be as good as Surtain/Parsons ?? Kool Aid/Dallas Turner ?? (coz if there are, surely some here will claim they said that prior to the draft....

ps. until Jeremiah heralded Slater (similar to Zion in the successive draft), Rashawn was mired in the second round conversation.... not so dissimilar from Fuaga who was a later first rounder to start this stanza

will also add, again not dissimilarly that Justin Fields and Mac Jones went just a bit later in the first round.... 11 & 15
5/11 Fuaga, 37 Kamari Lassiter, 40 Sinnott, 67 Bralen Trice, 69 Cedric Gray, 105 Jaylen Wright, 110 Braelon Allen, 140 Joe Milton, 181 Khristian Boyd, Tylan Grable, 225 Daijun Edwards, 253 Miyan Williams

What team is "who" ? If you look at the history of the draft most of the time a GM will draft BPA @ position of need.
Also some positions are valued higher than others (hello QBs) Did we have a LT at the time we drafted Slater and is
                      LT a valued position?

Our current situation. Let say we need a RT and a WR among other positions. But this seems to be the vortex.
Since they are two very different positions how do you determine BPA? Looks to me that what the HC/GM value
positional wise is going to make the distinction. The conventional thinking because of our OC and Harbaugh is
that they will lean OT. So are there any OTs in this draft valued @5? Versus the WRs? Hard to say.

As for #11. That's going to depend on who is on the board. Unlike #5 there would be expanded options.

I hope he is making a lot of money off of it - the bible for NFL salary cap fans -- so informative
