Sticking to Herbert in the offseason and attending his charity events. His one catch last season was at least a TD. Even with bad QB play, he's leading the team in yards(85), tied for most targets(7), tied for 2nd in most receptions(5), and tied for 2nd in AVG(17). He could be another Keelan Doss, but so far I feel like he's done what he's been asked to do.
Well Staley kept trotting out the likes of Quentin Johnston, Darius Davis over him.

    Numbers don't lie to me...
I'm basing things not on the past, but what have you done for me lately.
Good or great coaches should be able to recognize talent and NOT waive it. Use it.
Conversely, they should be able to discard of untalented players (Max Duggan etc...)
I believe this coaching staff are winners. They will make the right decisions.

"What I would do as I understand the Roman/Brady offense and Minter version 1.0 NFL D and assuming Ficken can work Magic with anyone" 53 man roster.

      QB: Herbert, Perez
      RB: Edwards, Dobbins, Vidal, Patterson
      TE: Dissly, Hurst, Fisk, Parham
OL: Slater, Johnson, Bozeman, Pipkins, Alt, Salyer, Leatherwood, Jaimes, McFadden
WR: Palmer, McConkey, Chark, Johnston, Rice, Davis

      EG: Mack, Bosa, Tuipulotu, Dupree
DL: Ford, Ogbonnia, Matlock, Eboigbe, Clark, Tart
      LB: Henley, Perryman, Colston, Dye
DB: James, Alohi, Finley, Harper, Fulton, Samuel Jr., Taylor, Leonard, Still, Hart

      1. I think Leatherwood should stay, PFF agrees. He can move bodies better than any other backup and that's invaluable to G-Ro.
      2. I have seen Parham block in person and I came away impressed. G-Ro wants to have SOME familiarity for Herbert and he will be utilized in redzone often.
      3. My potential surprise cut is Chark. I was and am a big fan lf this signing but he hasn't shown much in PS and I see a world where we go with 5 or keep Cornelius or Simi ahead of him.
      4. Let's talk DTs. I have OG, Tart and Clark making it because I think Minter feels comfortable leaving in a fatty consistently to take on blocks-Fox is my odd man out. Extra rushers will come from every other which way and I think he should prioritize run defense to force the pass with the hopes of our LBd and DBs tipping balls.
If opposing Os get a quick score, it plays into our hands as a bully-ball offense.
      5. Dye is my 4th LB and is a savvy vet type that replaces ST standout Niemann. I value experience there and don't expect Perryman to play the whole year.
      6. I can't risk Hart on the practice squad, I develop him on the job. Too much upside.
Leatherwood is awful. He gets moved more than he moves anyone else. He is not a LT. He hasn't even faced a first team Edge yet and he is getting beat like a drum.

He was moved to OG by the Raiders and Bears and both cut him.

If what you're saying is, you doubt that Joe Hortiz cuts anyone who goes on to be a good player on another team... I pretty much agree with you.

Because the Bolts aren't deep enough for any of the guys they cut to more than what I call Thrift Store players.

Last year, PK Dustin Hopkins was a valuable player who was a cut candidate due to the presence of Cameron Dicker. Rather than risk losing Hopkins to another team in the waiver process, the Cleveland Browns surrendered a 7th round draft pick to Trader Tom.

If a player has value? There's probably a market for him. And if there's a market for him, there's a decent chance you can arrange a trade, rather than outright cutting him. I don't think the Chargers have *that guy* this year.

Isn't Jalyn Phillips someone they cut recently?!? What is it with cutting, then re-signing guys?!?

It's not as if the player improved in the week or two he was away from the team.

They brought him back for less money?

I don't think it's going to be based solely on preseason. Schtick hasn't made anyone look good in preseason. Neither has Perez.
If they aren't good how can they make anyone else look good?
Fehoko made the best of his chances with the best throws though, I'll give him that.

It's my impression that Harbaugh grades practices more than preseason games.

Edit: saw this afterwards. GAC 53.
I don't think they are going to keep Leatherwood. He has been the worst lineman to date. 30-35% of the QB pressures came from Leatherwood last game. The next worst was 15%.
Time to put my money where my mouth is: Hampton will be better than Jeanty!
