Ingold certainly doesn't have the classic FB frame, like Daryl Johnston or Lo Neal.

I never really paid attention to how he played the game while he was with Miami, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it is that he gets the job done.

Okay, this inspired me to look up some Alec Ingold highlights.

I didn't even remember that he had played with the Raiders. He looks bigger in those highlights than in the more recent clips.

After viewing the vid, I'll say *this* for him: He catches well, and is a really strong finisher.

Chargers did fine with Alt and a healthy Pip last year.

Based on Charger history, Pip is one of the best backup OTs in their history .... better then more then a few Charger starters.

Ingold is not used like a classic old school FB. He spends most of his time blocking on the perimeter, or doing insert blocks where they have him slip through the line to get a LB or S. A lot of the time, McDaniel uses him as more of a motion Hback type. His lack of size and power isn't that big an issue when he is already moving at the snap.

It's a huge improvement over Fisk/Matlock. They don't necessarily have to destroy a guy to make a block (although the PFF grading system probably disagrees with that). Too many times our FB and TE would move towards their block, realize they aren't going to make solid contact and ... just stop ... and let the defender run past them. Ingold does the full speed thing. The defender has to go out of their way to avoid the block and takes themselves out of the play, leaving a big lane for the RB. If the defender doesn't, then Ingold has an easy block, which can often be quite spectacular because he is going full speed and generates some power behind it. More than his size would indicate.

If you want a FB to run an iso lead, where the FB blasts a run stuffing LB out of a inside hole and an obvious run down, then a guy like Patrick Ricard (or Fisk or Matlock) is your guy. As the description goes, it is not a big part of a McDaniel offense.

To some degree, I think Ingold is as much being brought in to beef up the ST. He is a really good ST guy, as well as a good locker room guy. It will be interesting to see how much he and the TE are used as receivers. If they want more pass catching out of it, Njoku and Ingold are not much in terms of route running, but both are effective after the catch. Njoku being the better contested catch guy, Ingold better at adjusting to poorly thrown passes.

Chargers have left themselves thin along the OL for many decades... I'm glad Pip is there to backup... that's what he is.
I think any team can survive an injury to one of their elite tackles... as long as their other tackle is above average. Luckily, ours are elite.

Pip is fine as long as you can help him with a chip from a RB/TE... and not ask him to do too much as a run blocker. We're not asking Burke to be elite... just cover what Pip gives us... for a fraction of the cost. He should be able to do that.

Looking to the 2027 season... they can save themselves $5m in cap space by trading/cutting Pipkins. Henly and Tuli are about to get paid. Smart money goes to quality extensions.

Right, we saw him more as a Raider and of course MM offense is way different than theirs. One thing we can say about him is he is a much better recieving target than Matlock. Likely a better blocker as well. They should try Matlock at OG. Just not thinking he will make it as a DT for us.

I was thinking same thing, Boltjolt. Matlock is not likely to make this team as a DT. He won't for sure as a TE/HB/FB. So maybe try him at guard. He is a little light for the position and he has zero experience so not likely to pan out. But it may be his only (very slim) chance. Or maybe I am just wishing for the next Kris Dielman.
Like, how am I a traitor? Your team are traitors.

Chargers beat KC and Denver with Alt/Pip, and started out 3 - 0 ... nothing to believe there success wouldn't have continued.
As was, they were a home victory against Houston away, to then meet Denver for the #1 seeding in the AFC.

By your very definition there Boltnut, Pip is most likely an above average NFL OT .... but all you really need is a solid NFL OT, most teams being stuck with an OT among the bottom half of starters.
New England's LT was raw crap the 2nd half of the season, and New England made it to the Super Bowl.

Cut Pip if Burke proves he is ready ... sure.

The way this team is being built is a beautiful thing. Waiting for the fruits to ripen is tough, but at least you can see it coming. World excites me, big dudes on the line is always get me.

Dielman was strong in the shoulders .... I think it was Kevin Acee who commented on how a DT could get on one of his shoulders with a swim move perhaps, and Dielman would neutralize him with power.
I remember one preseason game in which Dielman was closely trailing LT on a 50 yard TD run (2006?) .... he could really move, and then injuries slowed him down.

Matlock is not close to the specimen Dielman was.

Pip has played RT well at times. I don't recall any good games at LT.
