I am happy that Hortiz never stops trying to improve every spot on the 53 man roster and that this group will keep cycling in competition, in this case experience that knows the system and can help young players, and more than likely offer better depth behind James and Gilman than the likes of JT Woods who has been pretty much useles so far

Tony Jefferson fits the mold of my "redemption" post.
he's an SD native, former UDFA who has proven himself in the league but never became a champion.
just as he figured to settle for a scouting position in Baltimore, Hortiz comes calling with a last opportunity.
he's had a year to rest his body and survey the league.
I'd be optimistic of we signed him.

Or it can be looked at with a simple question

Is Jefferson a more accomplisged player with a better chance of being an effective bck up at safety than JT Woods or AJ Finley?

Jefferson has ties to several members of the Chargers staff. Jim Harbaugh is the older brother of Jefferson’s former coach, John Harbaugh, and Chargers GM Joe Hortiz was in Baltimore during Jefferson’s previous tenure with the team. After sitting out the 2023 season, Jefferson has decided he’s interested in a return and will get a chance to leave his mark with the Chargers in the coming weeks. Jefferson will be 32 this season. While his best days as a player are likely behind him, his experience as a starter would bring added value to any roster that’s looking to add depth in its secondary.
Is Jefferson a good...at least competent mid range safety?... the name sounds familiar...was he a great player when he was yonger?.... having great VET smarts in the safety room has to help the entire group!.... even James who has amazing ability but has been badly coached for years, can learn something from a greatt vet....

More vet experience, definitely. Physical ability, probably not.
Jefferson is 32 y.o., last good season was 2018, hasn't played much since. Up and down with other teams, retired a while..
He has a chance to make #5 S out of DJ, Gillman, Woods, Leonard, Finley, Dent, Harper, Phillips if he looks closer to 2018 than any time since in his tryout.
I wish him luck. He'll need it.

Andrew Stueber is an RT/RG to also keep an eye on. He played RT/RG @ Michigan under Harbaugh and was selected in the 7th round of the 2022 draft by the Pats. He was just cut by the Pats. He spent his rookie season on the non football injury list with a torn hamstring. He spent the 2023 season on the practice squad.
                  1) Cut Becton, Boz(ret), Dissly, DD, Fisk, and Dupree
                  2) Re-sign Tart, Hand (4m), Phillips (5m)
                  3) Sign the ERFA's Williams, Patterson, and Vidal (3m).
                  4) Sign free agents Cole Strange (OG-1.5 m), Whyatt Teller (OG-10m), Luke Fortner (OC-6.5m), Brunskill (OC-vet min) Leo Chenal (LB-5m), Rashid Shaheed (WR- 14m), Cade Otten (TE-8m) Greg Dulcich (TE-3m), K'Lavon Chaisson (ED 9m), Myers (DT-7.8m), Alec Ingold (FB-6m), Hendrickson (ED-25m), Seumalo (OG-9m), AVT (OG). Jenkins (OG- 12m)

If he is better depth than what we have then sign me up. At worst he is a camp body. Not every vet signing needs to be a Pro bowl starter.

Stueber...good size at 6-7, 325#...better pass blocker than run blocker, but he knows Harbo's system which is a plus...who knows? Possible PS material and later on called up if he shows improvement...

With Tony Jefferson getting a tryout with the team, that appears to show we have no interest in S Justin Simmons from Denver who is a much better player. I don’t think Hortiz would embarrass a vet with a fake tryout.

Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
                          Let’s win one for Mack.
