I won't relitigate all of the evidence that the Chargers DEFENSE was the main problem the last 4 years, I'll just drop one very simple data point which illustrates it:

Chargers scored 30 in the Jaguar playoff loss. Their problem was they gave up 31; 24 in the second half.
Except, it begs the question: why couldn't they score 33 or 37 or 40? The Chiefs outscored opponents all those years. In fact, had the Chargers offense kept the ball, prevented momentum, and had just a few drives, then they win that game. Offensive TOP aids the defense and keeps the other team's offense off the field. That Chargers offense was awful as far as TOP and moving the ball when it mattered.

Your "relitigating" is unnecessary because it ignores an important point: football is a team game. A good offense helps a defense. A good defense can help with shorter fields and more offensive opportunities. Special Teams help the offense and can shorten the field. I think looking at anything in a vacuum leads to faulty conclusions -- and I think that is precisely what folks have done with Roman. And I get it: it feeds their initial narrative about Roman.

Go and watch the all 22. The issue is that Chargers receivers are winning and getting open -- but their separation stinks. In other words, you have players that simply lack the skill to maximize being open. That has nothing to do with the system or the routes -- it is the lack of quality. But the fact that despite that, Herbert threw for 349 and they ended up with over 400 yards of total offense. That should be getting folks amped.

If you don't know that the Chargers Defense was their major deficiency the last 4 years, I am not going to stay on this topic long enough to convince you. Of course its a team game, of course all those other blah blah blahs ... but the Charger defense stood out due to its overwhelming stank for the last 4 years.

30 is a lot of points. its twice as much as Roman is scoring. Only one other playoff team that year lost if they scored 30. Every other team in every other game won if they scored 30+.

ok ok - I'm gonna suppress all of my Greg Roman fears and trepidations for a week. maybe you're right. not another peep for now.

A good article on Roman and the running game after this week's loss.

The rushing performance against the Cardinals was a disappointment. No question about it. But there remain reasons for optimism. It is clear the Chargers are better coached in the running game. It is clear the scheme is better, cleaner and sounder. Slater and right tackle Joe Alt both missed time earlier this season, and that stunted the chemistry development up front. Slater missed a game and a half. Alt missed one game. That stretch has skewed the numbers within a small sample of just six games.

“You got to be realistic in terms of player availability,” Roman said.

The Chargers are still learning Roman’s layered and intricate rushing offense. They are still seeing looks for the first time and adjusting on the fly, even within individual snaps.

“I don’t think we’ve nailed down that identity yet,” Roman said. “In order to do that, it takes a real consistency week in and week out, and that’s what we’re building towards.”

Roman has been cultivating this identity since he was hired in February, But, he said, “when you start up a new program, it never really jumps out like that.”

The run game has to improve. The Chargers are hoping time on task will help provide the solution.

“Do I like our run game? Yeah,” Harbaugh said this week.”Do I think we got the guys up front to have a strong run game? Yes. Do I think I have the backs and the tight ends that we need to have a really good, great running game? I do. That’s how I feel.”
The Chargers have shown flashes in the running game, but the loss to the Cardinals was a setback and shows where they must improve.

Has Roman ever had a better record than 3-3 at the start of one season as an OC ?
3 good rushing games but the last two suck
I think Slater and Alt were there
          Disquieting?

Jalen Reager was a first round pick. He hasn't lived up to that for sure, but the raw abilities have been evident.

Everyone had a chance to draft him and Rice wasn't picked until round 7.

            Rice ain't his daddy.

i don't know much about Reagor, but at his point in his career, I think the shine of "former first round pick" is gone.

he was cut from the Patriots practice squad after week 2 (possibly for sending out a corny tweet), and he did not make it onto our roster until the AZ game.

he had one catch (his only target of the game) and we all know how that ended up.

I ain't saying Rice is his daddy, but Reagor is a big question mark at this point. Rice was there for training camp and preseason. Reagor was on the practice squad for 3 weeks before being elevated shortly before the AZ game. Rice seemed like the next logical step, until Reagor got in front of him.

we need WR's - i am hoping that Reagor finds his first-round form and helps out the team. He sure as heck got open on his one big play, but that was the end of it.

we don't need Rice or Raegor, not even on the practice squad, we need to get MWs back and get some of these other guys to get healthier, Ladd, Davis, QJ, Chark, Palmer, and Fehoko are all banged up...right now coming back from the ACL Williams would be our healthiest WR if he was added to the roster...

Jalen Reagor's NFL Draft profile... The weaknesses make sense and we saw it during the AZ game.

Gets stalled by press more than expected. Strong cornerbacks ride and grind on early stages of route. Needs to maintain focus and finish his routes. Frustration with quarterback appeared to creep into play at times. Cornerbacks go unstacked on long throws. Uneven tape in competitive catch situations. Inconsistent leveraging space to catch. Ball skills fail to match athletic ability.

If Harbaugh spins any harder we're going to have to send a team to China to catch him when he pops out . . . . . . . . . .

All you have to do is watch the games to see that Greg Roman is well past his expiration date. Why did John Harbaugh send him on his way after 2022? It's right there in black and white.

Cue the "he wasn't fired, he resigned" crowd who I imagine have never had any experience with HR at the highest levels. "Sir, would you prefer to resign or be fired?"
