Been asking for YEARS why we've not had a Welker/Edelman type slot receiver. Can't tell me Rivers couldn't have used one!
When was the last time we had someone with McConkey's speed and quickness in the slot? Eddie Royal? Whatever it's been, it's been far too long.
Like the player, just not sure we had to move back almost 30 spots to grab him that high?
Anyway, he'll be just as valuable to Justin as Alt is.
    Good pick.

Tom Brady became the goat because of elite slot receivers who you draw up a play for in 3 and 6 situations to get you that first.

      thats Ladd

I do think that the reliance on late draft picks and UDFAs for that kind of player is coming to an end. But I don't think Ladd is just a slot receiver, he can play the outside as well. The one type of receiver that is now missing is the tall contested down field pass catcher, like Mike Williams. Again, there are guys that are found with the UDFAs like Malcom Floyd, or maybe with FAs. Tying this back to L-Mac (heh) he just gets open, like Keenan, and frankly isn't that body type to go after the fades.

After looking at some tape, McConkey reminds me of Hunter Renfrow-- smallish, water-bug moves, good hands, strong competitor.

Yep, and outside of Randy Moss, he never had big name WRs.

            We will be ok.

I was initially skeptical of the pick and now after reading more, I feel like a fool.

This guy is going to be good.

He’s a lot faster, has better measurables, and can play outside or inside.

                    I see Emmanuel Sanders

                    McConkey is faster than Renfrow

Like anything else, it all comes down to health. That’s why we have Ben Herbert.

I think with the McConkey pick, they are building a WR room that does not have a hierarchy, but has multiple solid, capable WRs with none of them being elite.

Similar to what the Packers have done for Jordan Love. Love in his 2023 breakout season had more than 4k yds passing and came within an eyelash of beating the 49ers to advance to the conference championship, after having torched the Cowboys' defense the previous week. Love's top 4 WRs had between 500-800 yds receiving, the top WR being Jayden Reed, who at 5-11/187 lbs had 783 yds and 8 TDs. None of his WRs are what you would consider elite.

It's not unreasonable to believe QJ will take a step forward in 2024, and with Palmer and now adding McConkey and one more WR to be determined later, very possibly a veteran FA, the Chargers will have built a similar type of WR corps for Herbert, all of them young.

                          McConkey is Chris Olave.
