Those were not just glasses, they were Coke bottle glasses/binoculars. I believe he was legally blind even while wearing them.

I worked with the wife of a guy who was a catcher in the Yankees top AAA team...after Munson died in that tragic accident, my wife's husband was brought up to the majors and the Yanks told him "the starting catcher job is yours." In spring training, he suffered a career-ending injury and went into coaching/teaching instead...
