LOL! Did he happen to notice the charge for the pickle-he-never-ordered on his bill...? Sneaky country girl... I think I knew her...

My time in Modesto was a great experience. Low cost-of-living... small class sizes @Stan State... and positioned halfway between SF and the Sierras. Lots of friendly people, too!

    Did you ever play night-golf...?

I grew up in Poway but lived in Ramona for about 8 years til we moved to Henderson,NV.

I did not like Ramona. Everything was so far away having to go down the hill all the time and work always took me an hour to get home.

Went to Julian a few times. Dudley's bread bakery and got some apple pies in town.

Yeah, it would be a bummer to have to make that commute every day.

Everyone went to Dudleys. Doesn’t get me as a thing like it was back in the 70s and 80s. For one, i see Dudleys pies in my supermarket in San Marcos. For two - well, its not that big a thing. For 3, there are a lot of great bakery options in greater San Diego now that didn’t exist back in the Wonder Bread days of our youth.

When I was a wee kid I would go out there a few times a year, some second/third something aunt on my mom’s side lived out there, we’d wander the fields with her boys hunting toads. 1 stoplight, very slow moving. Ramona has grown a lot, yet still not too big but I agree it’s kind of a pain out over that hill

Ramona had NHRA drags by the airport in the early sixties I raced there until the Army draft shut me down. I heard about the strip being closed when a AA fueler got off course during shutdown and hit a huge boulder at well over 100 mph.
            and the driver was killed.
.I had a great time, saw top national competitors like Big Daddy Don Garlits, Dyno Don Nicholson and others. Good old days.
I know SD back country pretty well.

Ever hear of cow town USA? A small cowboy bar. Myself and a friend got a two week vacation from a factory we worked at in El Cajon in '74. We went to Modesto.

We went to Modesto to see his mom. When we got there there was a hitch hiker whom I gave a ride to. We asked him where was a good place to go to to get a drink. He said cow town USA. We looked at each other and said cow town USA, what the f*ck is a cow town USA.

Well later that night we decided to hunt this place down. We found it and went inside. The moment we walked in the locals said who the f*ck are they. I looked at my friend and said we're going to die tonight. We went to the bar and sat down and ordered up a couple of beers. One guy on his side was trying to hustle him in pool and on my side a fellow was asking if I wanted to smoke a joint.

I was thinking what is going on here. I told my friend about what the one guy was asking me and not knowing if this guy was a narc we took him up on the joint. We went outside to my van and smoked the joint then went back in the bar.

The moment we walked through the door a fellow at the juke box played the song we don't smoke Marijuana in Muskogee. I knew for sure we were going to die. We ordered 2 more beers and a couple of these good Ole boys started to come our way. My friend said to me let's leave. We got out of there alive.. I now know what a cow town USA is. Never again, lol.

              Chicken? No, just smart.

                Great story! Classic!
Reminds me of my first night in Turlock... just south of Modesto.

I ran into a character who promised to show me around town... me being the new kid in town.
We went to a bar that was remarkably just like Cow Town USA that you just described.
I played a guy in pool (who fancied himself a shark).
He was fairly upset after I beat him twice... rather handily.
My new-found friend scurried me out of the bar before things got ugly.
We headed out to a farmhouse in the middle of giant cornfield.
5 or 6 of his good friends were there brewing and bottling their home brew.
We sat around capping home brews and smoking some of the local ganga... apparently, this is a time-honored tradition in the Central Valley.
Climbed up on the roof and watched a thunderstorm roll in.

In the morning, I went searching for a roommate from the ads posted on the CSU-Stanislaus bulletin board.
The first prospective roommate was none-other than the fine fellow I had beaten at pool the night before.
Luckily he was drunk enough the night before... he failed to recognize me as the fellow who had embarrassed him at pool.
Turns out, he was a nice guy... when he wasn't drunk. We became roommates.

                Good times...

So I have seen week 18 at Vegas listed as January 5th and also TBD. If it's a flex week it can be anytime Thursday - Monday correct? Do they have Thursday night football in January? Trying to plan a trip out and this makes it a real bi-otch.......

I used to run my 68' Charger at LACR in Palmdale. Dandy Dick Landy did the machine work on my 440 and I dropped the automatic for a 4 spd Hurst Pistol Grip.

                      Loved that car.

LACR shut down about 10 to 15 years ago. The rock quarry that was there next to it owned the land, tore down the track for all those goodies that were under it. The quarry mined out completely around it, shut down the .lease and the rest is history. They use to have Friday night grudge nights to keep the wanna be drag racers off the streets. It was a fun atmosphere there. I had an 83 Mustang GT convertible I ran a couple of times. I do miss the races they had there. This valley needs another LACR type track. There's alot of Ricky racers with their new muscle cars out here now. About 375,000 if not more in the valley where when you came out here there was probably 15 to 20,000 people? The valley has grown. When I moved out to lancaster there were 17,000 people.
