I was expecting more from DD as a WR also. He's a decent returner though and I think he'll stick with the team for awhile. I don't know if DD will ever develop into the type of WR Tank Dell is. Dell is exactly the same height/weight as DD but not as fast.
Really intrigued by Shenault. He could be a solid #3 or #4 WR, plus he can return kicks, plus he can make plays as an RB. I don't know if he will get any playing time this season. IMO, he could replace Reagor or Chark on the roster at any time.
When you look at the WR depth chart, there are only 3 guys: McConkey, QJ and Palmer. Chark and Reagor are dead weight. They contribute little to nothing. DD as discussed above is just a returner. He gets some carries on sweeps, but those plays haven't been very effective. He adds nothing as a WR. With QJ still struggling, and very little receiving production from the TEs or RBs, Herbert's options are very, very limited in the passing game. Some may not agree, but this offense could really use Austin Ekeler. He was a safety valve who could turn a dump off into a 25 yard gain or a TD. He was a beast in the screen game. I'm hoping Vidal can develop into that type of player.
I think DD is more comparable to Tutu Atwell than Dell. Tutu doesn't play much unless there are injuries but when he does play they will scheme up a deep shot every now and then for him to take advantage of his speed in addition to the short/intermediate stuff. They haven't done that with DD so no one knows if he can be a legit deep threat or not.
With Herbert's arm and DD's speed I think they should air it out to him at least once a game just to keep the defense honest.

I remember well the performances of both Tank Dell & Derius Davis during the Senior Bowl. Tank cooked everyone he faced & simply could not be covered. It was one of the more impressive one-on-one one showings I’ve seen (Ladd came close the next year). OTOH, DD was terrible. He got smothered every rep, & I honestly don’t recall a single catch he made. He clearly possessed great speed & quickness, but his route running needed a lot of work. Guessing it hasn’t improved a whole lot, judging by his lack of playing time (other than jet sweeps).
As for Shenault, I honestly feel he should be a RB. He’s 225 lbs, runs angry with the ball, & appears to have some really good contact balance. Might even offer more than the current group as a pass catching back.

Kinda agree with Dmac on this one. IMHO, he is more of a gimmick WR. Just get him in open space and let him try and break some tackles. Problem is when they do get him the ball in open space he gets swallowed up because the D has like 8 players in the box. He has had some nice pickups but not very many.
I agree with the rest of your response.
Time to put my money where my mouth is: Hampton will be better than Jeanty!

Dell is a good route runner and very quick. Problem is you use him too much, he isn't very big and he was injured often last year.
I'm guessing because Telesco always got asked about speed at WR, he reached for Davis. But we did need a return man.
It's pretty rare we see Davis run an actual route, it's always some sort of screen.
If we ever get another return guy who can actually play some receiver, Davis could get cut. He is taking up a spot while we pickup other WRs like Shenault instead of being able to play.

Tank Dell was one of the most polished route runners of that class. DD was a PR/KR primarily... with prospects of developing as a WR. You could immediately use him deep to stretch defenses. But the Lombardi/Moore offense rarely included deep routes. Probably because RT was so gawd awful...
