I wonder if it is best to leave people where they are, except have Salyer and Pipkins battle it out for OLT.

    Salyer (Pipkins)-- Zion--Boze--Mekhi--Alt.

I said play out his contract on the 5th year option and then franchise tag the following year due to all these guarantees. There's a difference in guaranteeing $30 mil and guaranteeing $100 mil. A single player can now set back an entire franchise for 3+ years if something goes sideways. Teams should not be responsible for $100 mil guarantees unless it's an elite QB. Everyone else can go pound sand.
I agree with this so much. Most of the players aren't worth their second contract extensions, especially with today's guarantees. You have very few cornerstone franchise players that you should allocate market-breaking money to, and that's usually your elite top 5 QB and a one-in-awhile player like an Aaron Donald. I think injury guarantees have to be significantly lessened and laddered in by year of contract. No player should be earning their entire guarantees while having season-ending or worse, career-ending injuries in their first year of a contract extension. Sad to say, but I honestly think Slater retires in the next camp. There's no reason for him to not take the money unless he absolutely loves to play football. At best, he comes back at 70-80% and I doubt he'll think it's worth the sacrifice. The Chargers will likely get hosed on this deal.

Of course our LT with the highest contract get injuried while Chiefs rookie who was injured and everyone avoid him like hot potato in draft will have all-pro season...

    I am devastated

A player signs a contract then puts his body on the line in a violent sport that generates billions for the owners of these franchises. You believe owners should be able to withhold a portion of a player's money if the player is injured trying to win a Super Bowl for the franchise?

They got Robinson for a conditional seventh-round pick. I think Conklin would obviously cost more. But targeting a team that isn't expected to do much to make a trade for an offensive tackle is probably on Hortiz's mind right now.
Yes, the Chargers are a top 10 team with aspirations. You want to protect that by acquiring a capable, quality OT, the FA options are not good enough.

After this, the age of big money guarantees are gonna dry up real quick without some caveats included.

The other two journeymen played, and I could show you hours of film on Pipkins making terrible blocks!?

Trey Pipkins has a net worth of 25 million dollars he's fleeced from the Chargers! Do you really think he's earned 25 m based on his play?!?

Keenan Allen and Derwin James both suffered injury setbacks early in their careers that cost them each the better part of two seasons. But both of them fought hard to come back from the adversity and become Pro Bowl players again. Slater will have these guys to lean on, to help him through it.

If Hortiz were to trade for a quality OL to play RT this season, that player could be moved inside when Slater returns and be the needed upgrade on the IOL going forward.
I admit i feel better hearing Josh Simmons injury was the same, He had it in October and seems to have come back well.

Did someone say Duke Merriweather had ths injury once upon a time? That is Slater's guru, he could be helpful if that is true.

Pip has had several years and a whole lot of coaching up to show his worth...at both T and G...and he's still a journeyman...about to go on a new journey after this season...
