It's called 'competition', and it's why Harbaugh welcomes competitors.
    (1) It will be "special" in a bad way if Matlock does not come to camp better prepared to play FB than he was at this time a year ago.
That statement shouldn't need an explanation.

    (2) Candidates for any position should be working harder to make a run at the SB in year 2 of Harbaugh's Chargers.
Candidates for Matlocks job will have to be selected by the coach. We didn't sign or draft any FBs.

Not to say that won't happen. They chose Matlock to take a new job last year, they wanted a FB and if Matlock doesn't perform at an improved level, that could be the case.

Id think Stevo, if he shows well in TC will be the FB and let Matlock concentrate on being a DT again. Klotz has more experience as a FB than Matlock does and it dont matter if its in Romans offense or not. He is blocking! Matters more that he is blocking NFL defenders.

No reason to keep trying to make Matlock a FB since they picked one up but we'll see how he developes.
Let's be honest: quality OL and DL don't get converted to FB, crappy ones(Jordan McFadden, Scott Matlock, Patrick Ricard) do. It's done to get some kind of value from a bad player who is under contract. It doesn't always, or even usually, work. Lorenzo Neal was a quality FB, Matlock is just a failed DT. He graded terribly as a blocker. That being said, the job is his until someone takes it away from him.

Odds are heavily in Matlocks favor as securing the FB position in 2025.

        1) Experience
        2) Versatility. You get a DL as well.

I will be surprised if he doesn't return and play the same roles this year.

QJ the only one that gets second and third chances on this team?

I'm a klutz for klotz. Maybe he wasnt a "FB" officially in college, but what he did in college is what we need a FB to do. He's being referred to as a FB/TE hybrid already - the transition has begun and he's already noticed.

LOL! It looks like we quit hoping for Zion or Bozeman to get fired. Harbaugh says his plans for them are working well and Zion is an Elite 10 player.
That sure as heck didn't come from fans but the lynch mob is less voluble.

Imagine if we had a healthy Corey Lindsley at Center. Odds are it would complete the best OL in Charger history.

Meantime, here's hoping Zion lives up to Harbaugh's lofty expectations at Center.

I didn't know a thing about Klotz but his fan enthusiasm has me paying attention. I wish him well earning a job in training camp. We need good young players.

Klotz was fun to watch in college. A punishing move blocker. Hoping it translates to nfl and he becomes an h back type.

Matlock is a 3-fer. Below avg FB. Below avg interior DL. Ok ST guy. Coaches love him. The TE coach says matlock wants to concentrate on becoming an all pro DL. Not sure what to make of that. If he gives up on FB I think he is very fringe
Like, how am I a traitor? Your team are traitors.

Harbaugh's Elite 10 are about physical improvement and work ethic. Hard to argue against that. Zion looks like he was built to play C and he's smart.
I think it was a smart move by coach but the proof is in the pudding as they say. I most certainly wish him well.
Regards Boze at LG? Same. He knows the job. If he struggles, it's reported that Salyer has converted some fat to muscle, is healthy and looking good.
I look forward to training camp. We have several OL depth and they're here with a chance to step up. Let's effin rock OL dudes. Three look beastly, Zion could make four and who knows? An avg LG might shine in that group.
                      I can't wait.
Houston was a bitter memory. Beat KC in Brazil and OL struggles will be forgotten.

Ok - I'll credit Ricards as our first 300lb FB. I don't think he's that good but fair enough, credit assigned. 3 more to go and I'll lose my bet, I'm confident its not going to happen. Prototypical FB size is not 300 lbs, its more like 250 lb. 300 lbs players cannot change direction as fast as a 250 lb FB can. Matlock showed regularly he couldn't adjust well laterally to moving defenders last year.

Maybe Matlock improves significantly. I want to see FB blocking like Stevo blocked in college

Miss the days of Lorenzo Neal, Tom Rathman, Maurice Carthon, Daryl Johnston, Mack Strong, Sam Gash, and so on. There's no reason for colleges to recruit lead blocking fullbacks anymore, so Harbaugh has to find players who can possibly convert to the position. Hopefully the fullback position will make a comeback someday.
