The Chargers do have worldwide support and like every other businessmen, they'll try to build on it, whoever the owner is. Yes, they don't have as many of them like the bigger franchises.

The Chargers have better resume than the Rams last 10 years. And the Brownies are basically a joke since forever.

But they are run by a lazy, ineffective, timid piece of shit, so the easiest path is to not rebrand. Don't compare 'Chargers' to 'Browns', when the Browns moved and rebranded, it was virtually guaranteed a new Browns would take over. If the Chargers abandon the name, it will die like 'Oilers'.

I know for sure that there are Chargers fans in Vietnam and Texas, there are a lot of them here in the Austin area. There are non-SD Chargers fans everywhere on the Internet and social media. The "they don't have" thing is completely false. They do have worldwide/out of town following and support, it's just not as much as the more successful teams.

I disagree that the Raiders are not a factor. IMO, Dean had to take the LA option, so that he can force the Raiders to seek relocation approval in March. The fear of the Raiders outflanking them in either LA or SD has been a huge factor. I'm even more convinced of this now after seeing the lack of buzz in LA media regarding the Chargers intentions, and the unambiguous Plaschke editorial.

They do have out-of-SD supports. Most of those supports come from younger fans who watched Seau, LT, Rivers and the good years of Boss Ross and Marty. And they're much more than you make it out to be. They would have nothing left if it's a complete different team.

Vina, would you care to guess how many "worldwide" fans there are, as compared to other teams? The point is that the Chargers are not as popular as other teams, and by quite a bit. Maybe they are more popular than Jacksonville, but I struggle to think of any other fan base. In San Diego, yes the majority of the NFL fans are/were Charger fans, but you see lots of other fans, probably more so than any other NFL city. There will be a growth in the fan base in LA, but my guess it will take decades to recover their overall fan base, unless they win Super Bowls. They will be playing 16 'away' games for years.
