THE CINCH

The Chargers’ LaDainian Tomlinson was the easy choice. The league’s fifth all-time leading rusher, he was a virtual cinch from the moment he became eligible. In his first appearance as a selector, presenter Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune didn’t have to convince anyone of Tomlinson’s worth. His speech was short, and so was the debate. Now there are two L.T.s in Canton.


Don Coryell. This was his last best shot, and he didn’t make it as far as a year ago when he reached the top 10. Ouch. Now stop if you heard this before: His 3-6 playoff record and failure to reach a Super Bowl sabotaged him. It did the previous three times he was a finalist, too. Now, his only chance, it appears, is as a contributor … provided, of course, the league makes coaches contributor candidates in the future. For the moment, a contributor is defined as anyone who is not a coach or player.

Tagliabue was considered as a contributor, but didn't get in... probably won't ever now.

Not true. Gates will go in as a San Diego Charger too, although if he plays this year it will also list LA. Same with Rivers. There's still a remote possibility that Coryell could go in too and he'd be listed as a San Diego Charger.

In my opinion, unless they change his category, Coryell won't get in. Too many 'name' players in the next three classes, and this might have been his best shot. I'm not sure what the criteria for coaches for the senior category, but the playoff record as a coach is holding him back, and the unsaid criteria will be the same even if he's not taking up a spot in the modern day category.

I do hope that Rivers and Gates claim themselves as San Diego Chargers if so elected, and hopefully in their first year of eligibility. At least LT isn't saying too much about the Jets... so far.

LT was one of those guys that whenever he touched the ball, you knew he could go all of the way. Incredible nose for the end zone. Great hands for a running back too. Congratulations LT!!!!!!!!!!!
