it's depressing to think that the only guys that should be back next year at WR for the Chargers are McConkey and DD and DD is a return specialist more than a WR...none of the other guys are worth a shit, they can't get open to save their lives and often when they do they still drop the ball uncontested, they can't catch contested balls and when you struggle to separate in the NFL you better have strong hands to catch contested passes...then there is the Greg Roman thing, is he using these guys correctly? Shenault's Combine 40 time was 4.58, not exactly blazing. He's not real tall but he's thick and he can bully DBs. I remember him doing that to Chargers' DBs when the Jags came to SoFi in 2020. He's also shifty for a big man, he was returning kickoffs for the 'Hawks this season and returned one for 97 yds to the house earlier this year. I think of him as a poor, poor man's Deebo. The fact that Hortiz picked him up means something. Hortiz has proven he knows how to evaluate talent and bring in players who over-achieve. My amateur observation for 30+ years is DTs that are not automatic Day 1 starters (e.g. Rd4s) often take 2 or even 3 years to develop. NFL OLs are just much better technique than college, they can’t get by just on physical traits like they did in college. It’s too soon but we can’t give any credit yet. Deebo doesn’t really seem like Deebo anymore, btw. He had one monster year, i think it was 3 years ago. Hasn’t looked fully the same since. He is not close to the most significant part of SF offense, he’s more like #4-ish on the skill player pecking order there. Of course if we pick up our #4 contributor off the street, thats great.

Yeah, but i think NFL will be different. He struck me as a bit too big and not fast or twitchy enough for an NFL edge role. He’s also not stout/fire-plug enough for A-gap run stuffing over the center (yet?) either, I hope he doesn’t become one of those tweeners that sounded great on paper but can never excel at any specific assignment. He looks like a B-gap DT, primarily in pass situations at first, to me but I’m wrong a lot and who knows what he develops into. in PS reps, he didn’t have technique down for the advanced post-grad class of NFL.Originally posted by powderblueboy View Post
It’s not unusual for DTs to take time to develop, 2024 won’t be the year we find out. Henley burst big his 2nd year as a new-to-LB player, who knows. Way too soon to right him off, he has some physical abilities.
