I have said from the beginning, this is a 9 win team -- at best. They simply lack the offensive talent to get over the hump. Could they steal a win and get to 10? Probably. But everyone should be ready for this team not making the playoffs. But from 5 wins to 10 wins in the first year of a rebuild is a HUGE turnaround. Also, not making the playoffs will make Harbaugh and this team hungry.
Herbert missed Palmer, but I've watched that play several times and Palmer seemed to mess up the route and in having to adjust, lost a few steps. Could Herbert have laid it up a bit? Yes. Tough to watch live for sure.
Folks like to attack Roman, but the offensive talent is lacking. Vidal is simply not a very good book. He cannot pass block, which is why he hasn't played much. He might have a role or place, but this team needs to draft another RB. As far as Smartt, the team hasn't used him because his blocking is poor. He gives up too much as a blocker and that creates problems in other areas. Harbaugh has his idea of players he wants, and he wants and needs players that are tough and that are unselfish and block well. That's why Donald Parham is not on this team any more. Maybe Smartt though creates enough plays to help this offense -- but the blocking will suffer.
If the Chiefs game didn't show this enough, the IOL is just awful. Pipkins may be bad, but Zion Johnson isn't much better. And Bozeman, good lord, he is poor. The way to beat this offense is pressure through the middle and man. Hard to beat anyone given the deficiencies at IOL and WR.
A bright spot? QJ may not have been worthy of a first round pick, but he has a place in the NFL. Watching him play mad and physical suits him. He needs to play that way. He needs to use his physical tools to his advantage. He needs to welcome contact and use his speed and power.
