Brian Hoyer to be Cleveland Browns Week 3 starter
The Cleveland Browns spent the offseason touting a quarterback competition between Brandon Weeden and Jason Campbell that, from the start, felt like a mirage.
That's exactly what it was.
With Brandon Weeden sidelined by a sprained thumb, coach Rob Chudzinski announced on Wednesday that Brian Hoyer, not Campbell, will start Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.
Hoyer, listed as the team's third-string passer, will make just his second NFL start after engineering a 27-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers as a member of the Arizona Cardinals last December.
Hoyer was signed in the offseason to pad Cleveland's quarterback room. The former New England Patriot is a favorite of general manager Michael Lombardi and showed well during the preseason.
This isn't a complete surprise. After Weeden was hurt in Sunday's loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Chudzinski said Monday that both backups passers were in the running to play against the Vikings.
That opened the door for Hoyer to hopscotch Campbell, who must wonder what his future holds in Cleveland.

Chud is saying that the decision is 'all his,l and Hoyer can make all the throws". Mike Lombardi is also a Hoyer fan. But you can't downplay Norv's role in this decision. It's not too late, Chud, get rid of the soul-sucking entity on your coaching staff, and you might survive a year or two as a HC.
