The Los Angeles Chargers have agreed to terms with quarterback Trey Lance, the team announced Friday. The deal is for one year and worth up to $6.2 million, a league source confirmed. ESPN first reported the news.
Lance was the No. 11 quarterback and No. 136 overall player on The Athletic’s updated top 150 free agents list. The No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Lance has appeared in 12 games during his NFL career, including five starts.

He spent the first two seasons of his career with San Francisco and played in six games as a rookie, making two starts. He then opened 2022 as the 49ers’ starting quarterback but missed the rest of the season following an ankle injury in Week 2.
Lance was traded to the Dallas Cowboys ahead of the 2023 regular season and has spent the past two seasons there. He did not play in a regular-season game in 2023 but made four appearances last season. Lance played in his first game for Dallas in Week 10 as a backup to Cooper Rush following starter Dak Prescott’s season-ending injury in Week 9. He then made his first start for the Cowboys — and first NFL start since September 2022 — in Week 18, completing 20 of 34 passes for 244 yards in the regular-season finale against the Washington Commanders and rushing for another 26 yards on six carries.
In his 12 career appearances, Lance has thrown for 1,063 yards and five touchdowns to four interceptions, while rushing for 276 yards and a touchdown. He now joins Taylor Heinicke, who signed a one-year extension with the Chargers in March, to back up Justin Herbert.

Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
    Let’s win one for Mack.

Wow. That was unexpected. But he's got $6.2 million worth of talent at a valuable position. Time will tell on this one.

A bit surprising ... 6.2 million? If they were going to stash and develop him, okay; but doesn't look to be the case.

Develop and trade for future pick, maybe
Always like the idea of going after a young "talented" QB for future trade.

agree with this. and maybe have in our back pocket as gadget play guy. at least JH2 are kicking the tires. sitting around with Easton Stick for 4 years was lazy. it had to be clear by year 2 that he had no potential to amount to a trade prospect, comp pick, reliable #2. etc.

              Remember that ?

Ahead of the 2021 NFL draft, most analysts predicted Lance or Alabama quarterback Mac Jones would be taken third overall by the San Francisco 49ers, who traded up with the Miami Dolphins in exchange for their first-round picks in 2021, 2022, and 2023 and their third-round pick in 2022.

Someone knows who are these 4 players ?

Maybe Harbaugh saw something in Lance when we played the Cowboys in the preseason last year?

If the contract is mainly incentives with a low guarantee I think this is a decent pick up. The team needs a 3rd Qb and Lance offers a good running threat at the very least and has a good arm if they can develop him. Plus, if he puts up some good pre-season tape he may end up having some future comp pick or trade value imo.

They traded the 2021 first rounder to move up for Jaylen Waddle, the 2022 first rounder to trade for Tyreek Hill, and traded the 2023 first rounder to Denver for Bradley Chubb. The third rounder was used to draft LB Channing Tindall.
