There are a lot of ways Hortiz can go with Lance. He's a young 6-4, 226, #3 pick NFL QB. The Chargers have one of if not THE best facilities and staffs in the NFL.
I was surprised. Regardless, you can't convince me that Hortiz doesn't know what he's doing.
Easton Stick is 1-5. Trey Lance is 2-3 as a starter.
Online chatter a few years ago suggest Lance basically has as strong/stronger arm than Kaepernick had and runs faster too (21mph clocked speed). Perhaps Chargers felt he was a good default system QB.
Cleveland, Jets, Giants, Pittsburgh, why did no one sign him to a relatively modest contract that would allow him to compete to be a starter? I don’t get it.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.
Let’s win one for Mack.

They don't want to develop a QB. They want someone to come in and play right away. They don't want to take the lumps that come with a inexperience QB, which is what Lance is.
If we take our time, spend time on his mechanics and then bring him along a bit at a time, he could turn into a pretty good QB. Pick some his best plays, put them in the game plan, hopefully when we think we can dictate the coverages either situationally or by personnel, and then ask him to run a couple per game. It would give him some confidence and not ask him to learn to do everything at once. Then, next week, change things up, pick some new plays, new situations and let him run a couple more.
Making him learn to swim by kicking him into the deep end is probably not the the most elegant way to teach him to be an NFL QB. He only played in 19 games in college, with only 1 year as a starter. That's fine if you are a small school QB, but he just hadn't played much against top caliber competition. He needs to play, but not to the point where he is set up to fail. He might be able to learn enough in practice, preseason and then get lucky, but do you want to bet his development on hoping and wishing.
IF Lance does have to start, then we need to go to the Ravens plan. There is no way he is going to a great passer right off the bat, so run the ball a lot, go play action and RPO and don't ask him to do too much.
thats gonna leave a really big hole right in front of him at RG, you sure about this plan?
Well, just for the tush push play, Pip goes to RG...he does his usual thing and lets the defender right in, which relieves the congestion somewhat...meanwhile, Lance is over C, takes the hike, and Becton is at upback in the I-formation with Matlock at tailback...after Lance gets the rock, Becton lifts him up AND pushes him kind of over the pile...meanwhile, Matlock pushes Becton as best as he can...easy TD! Call it the "Towering Tush Lift Play"...
22 - TE Mason Taylor
55 - RB Quinshon Judkins
86 - DL Josiah Stewart
125 - G Dylan Fairchild
158 - C Jake Majors
181 - WR Donte Thornton
I think Terrell Pryor Sr. made a switch from Qb to WR and actually had a 1000 yard season one year and probably extended his career a few seasons as a comparison of a player with similar traits.

props to him for making the switch and getting to play. Tebow could not suck it up and move to tight end. he spent a few years wasting away in minor league baseball.

Why didn’t any of them sign Heineke? Where is Stick today?
The correct roster improvement comp today is Stick as of now. We’ll see if there’s any upside to challenge for #2 in camp. he has more physical talents then Heineke but its fair to say he hasn’t put it together on the field yet. One comp I see he has to Herbie is arm strength - and he’s got speed to burn.
