He was also a starter because James Daniel was injured.

I think he will start at one guard position for the Chargers
6.5 would seem like (modest) starting money but let's remember two things:
-There's more money in the pool than ever before, so things can be inflated
-Free agency tax is a factor.

I don't think the Chargers are locked in at Strange as a starter. I think they view it as a baseline going into the draft.

How about the term non-quality starter?

Zion is getting $16.5 mil per year. That should tell you something. He should have been on a 1-year prove it deal, but he got 3 years ( a bunch more if you count all the void years). Teams are desperate. YAC is being polite and calling it a tax, but highway robbery would be closer to the mark. Cleveland was just plain desperate. So are we.

Also have to take into account what the teams that have chosen not to re-sign these players are left with.

The Bills did not re-sign David Edwards. They now have Alec Anderson as the current starting left guard. Anderson was an offensive tackle at UCLA, went undrafted in 2022, spent a lot of time on Buffalo's practice squad, and has started a total of six NFL games. The only guy to compete with him is Nick Broeker, who was their seventh-round pick in 2023, didn't make the final roster that year, played for the Houston Texans in 2023 and 2024, bounced around Pittsburgh's, Dallas's, Kansas City's, and Buffalo's practice squads this past season, and just signed a reserve/futures contract with the Bills two months ago. That is, unless, they are going to move Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, their backup center, to left guard. He was a fifth-round pick in 2024 and has started only two games. Regardless, they don't have much, and they let Edwards go sign with New Orleans, where he got $15 million a year. What does that tell you?

There are times when losing a FA works out for teams. Remember that a player can develop very effectively in practice. Deilman was a DL when he played in preseason his rookie year, and played very sparingly as a rookie. Then he took the starting job from Tony Fanoti (2nd rd???). It can happen. I think we would all agree it is not ideal.

Anderson has played reasonably well in spot duty, and is a lot better this year than last year. He just hasn't played very much. In part because Edwards has been very healthy.

Buffalo is trying to develop their young guys to replace guys who they cannot afford to keep. That is hopefully the situation we will be in eventually. We just aren't there yet.

Agree with this… I think they take at least 1 IOL in the draft and sign 1 more. If it’s either Teller or somebody like Ben Bartch I’m good with. If it’s somebody like Bartch, I think they take a G within the first 2 rounds. If it’s Teller, I think they take one in the 3rd or 4th.
