Not sure if Bukowski really counts as Beat, though.

Charles Bukowski. Wrote Post Office, Factotum, Ham on Rye, etc. Good stuff. Literary low-life. A bit like a modern-day but grungier Steinbeck.

For those who can't read, rent Barfly. You'll get the gist of Bukowski.

I know Bukowski. Read most of his stuff when I was a teenager.

            I don't consider him a best writer.

            Edit: or a beat writer

Agreed, I wouldn't have lumped him in with the Beats.

How old is Ghelken anyway? In that tiny picture of him by his stories, he doesn't look very young.

I agree it was a stretch. I always related to him more than the beats, and I read all those guys around the same time so i guess my oldtimers disease showed up in my filing skills, huh?

                    John Fante, then.

                    Maybe not.

                        Back to A & G...

This introduction to the piece is an example of poor writing.

This column was going to be written regardless of last Sunday's result.

It just makes more sense -- and you'll be more receptive to hearing about how well he’s performing -- because the Chargers won.
How well who is performing? The person mentioned in the title of the column, which you did not write? And which post-dated the writing of the piece? You are referring to a person in second person whom you have not introduced? This challenges third grade standards.

And this is an example of making yourself part of the story:

Before the tweets and e-mails start, declaring that I’m kissing yet another head coach’s backside, let me emphatically dispel that notion by saying that I personally have no use for Mike McCoy.

I find him disingenuous, almost smarmy, in his dealings with the media.
Who really gives a FUCK about your personal utility for the man you are reporting on? Who gives rip about how difficult he makes your job? Why are you persistently bemoaning the emails and Tweets challenging you? Grow a pair.

If I were writing a blog about my personal feelings, one of he first posts would be about how I have no use for Kevin Acee and his slack, lazy, unprofessional writing style and his weak, beholden reportage. Next installment, we'll deal with his grammar issues. The UT is 3rd world and 3rd rate.

                          Acee's a TJ Simers wannabe.
