I'll have to pull up Troutman's bio, but I think he had some impressive stats.

    Edit: (Taken from Chargers.com)

The reason the Chargers were able to overlook Troutman’s injury and still select him in the fifth round was the fact that he started his last three seasons at left guard for the Nittany Lions without allowing a sack. Troutman was credited for throwing 38 touchdown-resulting blocks during his career, and as a senior in 2011, he wasn’t flagged for a single penalty. During his junior and senior seasons, Penn State led the Big Ten in fewest sacks allowed. Troutman was an honorable mention All-Big Ten pick in ’11 and he was named the Brooks-Irvine Memorial Football Club of New Jersey’s Division I College Player of the Year.
Three sackless seasons is pretty damn impressive!

“The emphasis this week was on protecting Rivers,” Harris said. “And I feel like we did a good job of that. That’s a big, physical group. But I’m just proud of our guys, they stepped up, especially Johnnie Troutman at left guard.”

Rivers also pointed to Troutman as a guy who played well. In the locker room after the game, Rivers highlighted a conversation he had with Troutman after he threw a 56-yard touchdown to Gates in the final quarter with just under seven minutes left in the game.

“I kind of just told him you can’t be hurt,” Rivers said, when asked about his conversation with Troutman on the field. “You’ve got six more minutes, and then you can be hurt for a little while, but you can’t be hurt. Because there were a couple times where he looked like he was going down. And I was kind of like, ‘Hey Johnny -- no, that’s not an option today.'"

        Prediction:
        Correct: Chargers CI fails miserably.
Fail: Team stays in San Diego until their lease runs out in 2020. (without getting new deal done by then) .
Sig Bet WIN: The Chargers will file for relocation on January 15.

            Blast from the past

Troutman gained attention this week when it was learned that injuries will sideline him this season. That came as no surprise to the Chargers, who believe that Troutman can have an impact when healthy. They didn't have a sixth-round pick and chose so late in the seventh rounds they feared he might be gone when it was their turn. So they acted when they could, drafting him with 2013 in mind, and here's one reason why: Scouting reports say he didn't allow a sack in 32 starts, and that'll draw the attention of a club that just lost guard Kris Dielman.

AJ Smith: "We wanted to spread it around between a guard and a center, if we could, and we had him for the future. He's a big guy who has the ability to help us at guard and who can learn. We're looking for depth to add in there and try to get three-deep again.

"You heard me say this last year: We need better depth; we need to have backups. We need layers of this, and we think he's a guy who can be a backup. I'm willing to invest a year to see what we're going to get. It's like Jimmy Johnson says, 'Do you want to take some chances and build your team? Or do you want to be cautious and play middle of the road?' I don't roll that way."

It would be great if Troutman turns out to be the answer at one of the OG spots. That leaves us needing a future Center, and LT. Time to draft this defense.
