While everybody went on a rabbit trail not answering the question. I was thinking the same thing I seen a year ago or the ESPN Science on Ryan Matthews showing his vertical leaping ability and his acceleration and it seem like a no brainer that at least one of the three calls you would try it. to Knowing how the defense was playing why don't you go for the win? Coaching scared doesn't win games, the possible out comes

1 We call the weak 3 plays kick the field goal go into OT as we did and lose
    2. We feed Ryan the ball that dude who had two straight 100 yard games and he scores and win or he doesn't we kick the FG and lose in OT
    3. We feed Ryan and he fumbles and we lose period.

I rather go down swinging running plays with our best players in the game Woodhead has been great all season, but thats not the guy you want on third and short on the goal line.

I feel like McCoy & coaching staff got Norvous and failed to dial up the best play.

It's just what it is: Nowheresville. No playoffs, no Super Bowl, no high draft choices to get excited about. Just middle of the pack, win some/lose some, year in, year out nonsense.
go back and review Bill Cowher's and Jeff Fisher's and Tony Dungy's records before their Super Bowl appearances. Lots of mediocre 8-8 seasons in there before they break through.

I don't feel, talent-wise, they fall into that 7-12 range; more like 18-22, IMO. And, really, there's nothing sacred about that 7-12 range; that's just my opinion as well.

In addition, the team is NOT healthy and hasn't been since before the season started. They also have too many weaknesses that are too easily exposed.

What does our playoff expectations have to do with whether Matthews gets the ball at the goal line?

As to the actual question - It's retarded that we didn't pound the ball 3 straight time with McNeil and Matthews. Gotta go power running from the 1 yard line. Just ridiculous that we actually threw the ball with 2 timeouts in our back pocket. Asinine coaching.

I went back and reviewed Dungy's record, especially with Indy. He never won LESS than 10 gams in a season. Fisher isn't a great example, either; he never won a Super Bowl.

Cowher is is a better example, but even he averaged 10 wins/season over 15 years. And...he won his only SB in his 14th year.

The Chargers will be long gone from San Diego in 14 years.

Completely agree. Also, I hate overtime rules. IMO it should be kind of like college/Baseball hybrid. No stupid coin flip to determine the outcome. Give the visiting team the ball that 50. Let the kick the FG or Score a TD. The home team gets the chance to match or win on the subsequent possessions.

People in Washington like the current playoff rules.

By the time the guy(s) you drafted in 2013 are hitting their stride, the guy(s) you drafted in 2009 are leaving for a bigger paycheck.

Honestly, it takes a lot of luck to win a Super Bowl; I'm really starting to believe that. You don't have to be the best team; just somewhere from 7-12th best, IMO. You've got to get hot late in the season, you have to be relatively healthy, and...you gotta get a couple of good bounces.
I don't know about that either. The Chiefs went from 1-15 last year to 9-0 this year. You get the benefit of a high draft pick but you also get the benefit of the last place schedule. It does seem like the Chargers are never going to change from being a 7-9 or 8-8. Not good enough to make the playoffs and not bad enough to improve the team

Absolutely nobody thought the NFC east would be the worst division in the NFL this season. Things change year to year and divisions cycle. trying to predict the quality of TE,as next year, at the mid point this year is ridiculous.
