Gates is only slightly more capable than Aaron Hernandez at this point. He's done. Cumberland already knows the offense and is the best fit out there IMO.

If Cumberland was better he wouldn't have been behind Gates and every other TE we had last year.

that was LAST year. Look at the depth chart now, and options being proposed and tell me how many are better now- that also don't have to learn the offense before they can get on the field in games.

I don't really care about the depth chart today on May 31st but I do know that he is 31 years old, and has never Had as many receptions as Gates had last year in any of his seasons in the NFL. And last season was Gates worst. Gates did play well down the stretch when they needed him.
Tony Gonzales played pretty decent at this age and Gates can have one year left.
Also if Cumberland is ahead if Green on the depth chart it's only because he don't know the offense yet. Means nothing right now.

It's preseason.... Gates doesn't do that. LOL.

I don't think he'll do the hometown discount just because of team loyalty, but I don't think there is much demand for his services. So, he'll come in probably in the first week of TC then they will hold him out until needed. At this point I'd rather them go "11" personnel, with a real blocking TE, and have Allen and the two Williamses out there. Kind of vanilla, but if the OL is better with Lamp and Pouncey, it will fit to Coach Lynn's idea of smashmouth.

Tight end Virgil Green, who signed a three-year, $8.6-million contract in March, is more of a blocking specialist who did not catch more than 22 passes in any of his seven seasons with the Denver Broncos, but Whisenhunt believes Green can assume a larger role as a receiver.
Gates is gonna get at least 2.5 million to sign. Forget vet minimum.

Be curious if he signs somewhere, and if so does he outperform Green.

I believe vet minimum is tied to years in the league. For someone like Gates, ~$2M might be vet min

PR is going to make any TE look better. That is a plus.

I kinda want to see what the UDFA rookies and second year players can do in the preseason
