    Welcome back Marshall

With Richard Marshall and Brandon Ghee, Chargers have added two corners in two days. Position expected to be further addressed in draft.

Chargers agree to one-year deal with CB Richard Marshall, source says, as @RapSheet reported. Marshall started six games for team in 2013.

I agree...the defense seemed to stabilize when we finally sat Cox and Patrick took over. At the very least he provides decent depth.

Sat Cox, decent depth...I am sure there is a joke in there. MH, go...

            Chargers bring back CB Marshall

Team expected to address position further during May draft

            By Michael Gehlken 06:25a.m. Mar 14, 2014

The Chargers added Friday their second cornerback in two days.

            They're likely not done yet.

Richard Marshall will return to San Diego, agreeing on a one-year contract, a source confirmed. He started eight games last season, including the playoffs, for the Chargers and follows Brandon Ghee, a former Bengal on a two-year deal, as cornerbacks to newly join the club.

The cornerback competition in training camp ought to be interesting.

At least another name will join it.

The Chargers are expected to address the position further during the May draft, it standing as quite possible a 2014 starter is found there. Shareece Wright, Marshall, Steve Williams, Ghee, Crezdon Butler, Marcus Cromartie and Brandon Jones currently compose the depth chart. Ultimately, the makeup of the position will be decided over performance from the spring into training camp and the preseason.

In 2013, Marshall signed mid-August and eventually overtook Derek Cox in the starting lineup.

He totaled 62 tackles and six passes defensed, as the secondary allowed fewer big plays to close the year. The Chargers defense still ceded, for the season, a 105.2 quarterback rating versus passes that traveled more than 20 yards in the air, third worst in the league.

            The league average was 81.2.

Improved pass rush can help that area significantly, but the team still wants better cornerback play. It waived Johnny Patrick, a nickel corner, earlier this month.

Why? He was solid down the stretch. He was one of our best tacklers. I would be disappointed if he ended up the starter, but he's solid depth. Why create another hole in the roster?

He was brutal in coverage. I just see no upside in him. I'd rather have guys like Ghee who could potentially improve and develop vs. mediocre options like Marshall as depth.

I think Marshall improved a lot over the course of the year. Early I was on his case for some dumb mistakes but he really started to play within himself and made some positive plays for the team considering our Cox issues.

I expect we will draft a CB fairly high (top 3 rounds) and will see Williams and these guys battle it out for the 2nd and 3rd CB spots. I feel better with some depth now...hope we get a talent in the draft to drive our future at CB.
