    Jerideau and Geathers

Time to get some cussin' and dis-cussin' going in here.

We know that Thomas is slotted for the first-string NT job, but our backups so far are Geathers and Jerideau. What do you all think about that position battle?

The word I heard on Geathers is that he can be lazy and doesn't motor 100% on all plays. However, his bloodlines are very strong, and he grew up around the game. He's also big as a Hoarse.

I don't know that much about Gerideau, but here's a blurb from Gil Brandt:

He could be a priority free agent. (my bold) - Gil Brandt, NFL.com
Any thoughts on these two? Can they make the team? and Can they be effective in relief of Thomas? Or do the Bolts find a vet to fill in this year?

My fear is that if we put one of them on the PS, then he might get picked up later in the year by a team with injuries. Of course, if they're not good enough to make the team outright, then it may not be that big of a worry. However, guys like this need a lot of work on technique and how to be pros, and the PS is the best way to get them the exposure they need.

Can either one of them play DE as as well? It seems like Gerideau is strong and pretty quick, so he might be a candidate to move over on rushing downs. He seems a bit too short to be a pass rushing DE, but his size seems perfect for an NT.

    What think you all?

I think the Chargers definitely need to bring in a vet NT.

Not saying those two cant play but the odds of an UDFA coming in an contributing positively for the team at the NT position are very slim.

Can't wait to see them in preseason.

Yea im looking forward to seeing them in pre also. At this point one will make the team due to sheer lack of depth. Geathers looks soft to me. And his height at NT could make it hard to get under OL and drive them back. Jerideau's pretty well known for how strong he is. Pretty raw though. I like that hes got the strength part down.

At least one will make the squad and probably be inactive on game days. Do we need both if one steps up and one doesn't?
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

There's got to be a rotation at this position. Unless a vet is cut and clears waivors down to us, 1 of these guys makes the team and is active on gameday. My bet is on Gaithers. The 4 preseason games will be the stage for them to compete on.

I'm torn on whether they should try developing these 2 guys or bringing in a veteran NT. My main issue comes down to Cam Thomas. I'm just not sure if he's a bonafide starting caliber NT. Ideally 1 NT should be able to handle all the rush downs during the game since we pull him in nickel downs, which would allow us to stash these UDFA's as either inactive or on the practice squad.

We would have a game day rotation of Cam, Liuget, Reyes, and Wynn with Wynn the rotation guy. Last season Pagano was running a 4 man interior D line rotation that included Garay towards the end of the season after going with a 5 man rotation earlier in the season. Granted we ended up with a 4 man rotation, but I think we can all agree Reyes deserves to take all the snaps vs. splitting them like he was earlier in the year with Martin.

As far as the two young guys, I would like to develop them mainly because Thomas is a FA after this season and I'm just not sure he deserves an extension yet. It would allow us to let him walk and rely on these 2 guys next season if they (at least 1) turn into starting caliber NT's. Obviously though, pads need to come on to gauge anything regarding these two guys.

Pagano doesn't rotate them as much as people think. He just takes them out for the nickel aligment. More than enough time to get a breather if needed. Our NT's last season played about 50% of snaps in a game.

Reyes and Liuget are the guys that need to be ironman.

We would be lucky if one of the guys develop into a game day player. Two? Very unlikely.

I don't expect either one to play at all barring injury, even if they are active on game day.
