San Diego's dip into the free-agent market for wideouts last year proved to be disastrous. In 25 games between the two of them, Meachem and Royal produced 37 catches for 441 yards and three touchdowns. Total. Meachem might have looked better in the old San Diego downfield passing attack when it actually gave Philip Rivers time to throw, but Meachem's $14 million guaranteed is basically a sunk cost now. Royal got only $6 million guaranteed and could have a more meaningful role if San Diego moves to a short passing game, but he has to make the roster first.

Meachem is going to be here this season. The question is about Royal. We are deepest at the WR position, he has had issues with injuries, and we would save about a million cutting him (net savings or course).

That's a valid point, but he didn't do that. He used the money that would have been allotted to VJ on Meachum, Royal, and McClain. All 3, 1 year later should arguably be cut. Vj is coming off a 1350 yard 8 TD year.

I actually supported that hold out because it made sense from his position. VJ plain and simple got screwed that season because the CBA wasn't in effect. The Chargers took advantage of it. He chose to sit out and not risk injury. He should have been a FA since he had 5 years of accrued time. Should of done a long term deal, trade him, or let him go. Making him play for a tender taking advantage of the situation was a bitch move by AJ.
