I remember listening to a radio interview with Kevin Acee. He said nearly everyone in the draft room wanted to draft linebacker David Harris in the first round in 2007, but Norv pushed hard for Buster Davis. Harris had a few good years with the Jets. We all know what Davis turned into. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other instances like that when Norv was head coach. It wouldn't surprise me if he told A.J. he could turn Jacob Hester into the next Daryl "Moose" Johnston.
Jacob Fucking Hester forever made me hate all tweeners. Not good at anything, just could do multiple things poorly. NFL is a game of specialists.

It's still to be determined with Brandon Staley, but we haven't had a real head coach since Marty was fired.
      Gillman, Coryell, Ross, Marty . . . . . . . . and a whole bunch of nothin

Yep...totally wasted draft pick...AJ KNEW pre-draft Byrd would never play due to that accident...and he never did...crazy to do something like that, when a LOT of 7th rounders and UDFA's have turned into solid starters...

Yep...AJ almost lost Dielman, who was close to signing with the Seahawks, when the Spani intervened and wooed him back...

The way he handled Vincent Jackson in 2010 pissed me off the most. Should have just extended him. He played very well through the 2014 season in Tampa Bay. Following the 2011 season we basically traded Jackson for Robert Meachem, one of our worst free agent signings ever (14 receptions in one year with us before we cut him). Just imagine the 2013 season with Jackson, Keenan, and Gates (Malcom Floyd gut injured that year). Vincent Brown was our #2 receiver that year. He was out of the NFL completely two years later, when he was 26.

Then there was Darren Sproles, whom A.J. didn't re-sign after the 2010 season. Sproles played another nine years after leaving San Diego.

Ah, Jacob Hester, the UDFA that we drafted in the third round who played like an UDFA. But not a good UDFA.

I agree on Sproles. That was a travesty.

You might be too young (?) but losing Jackson was nothing like losing John Jefferson. I was devastated. JJ was my favorite player and such a huge part of Air Coryell. You would have loved the guy, all Charger fans did. But then he got traded to Green Bay and flamed out and we traded (ironically for another Saint WR) Wes Chandler who almost made me forget about JJ. Wes was so graceful and so unbelievably fast.

We didnt really miss a beat after JJ, and I thought it was more his fault. VJax however, … sigh.

I agree. JJ was great and he was the perfect fit for Air Coryell. Winslow said it was JJ that taught him how to catch one-handed. Now it seems they all can do that but back then it was a rare ability.
I agree about Wes too, he was one of the best in the NFL back then.

Losing someone like JJ was a heartbreak along with Fred Dean. Wes softened the blow for JJ.
