The point is a LOT of people here had the exact same reactions to his play calling and wanted Steichen gone when he was our OC. The revisionist view of the golden era of play calling when he was here is pretty funny.

Sure, there were some moments that year that were questionable, but we'll never know just how much meddling Lynn had in the play calling, as I would imagine the clock management issues were due in part to Lynn and Steichen arguing over play calls on particular downs. Both of them blamed themselves for the mishaps. What we do know is Herbert had one of the best rookie QB seasons in history, and he did it behind a worst in league offensive line and with 2 of the most impactful offensive players being UDFAs in Guyton and T-Billy. Maybe Burrow had it worse, but even that is debatable.

So far, this year, Steichen's play calling has been mostly on point, playing to the offenses' strengths, and still putting in wrinkles for Hurts to make explosive plays, so it's hard to say just how unrestricted he was here versus now with the Eagles.

I doubt he ever plays in the NFL again. 12 fumbles in 41 games for Broncos. Is there a worse record?
