I concede there may be extenuating circumstances why Franklin did not remain with the Bolts, but put me on the side of the argument that says the defensive line was worse without Franklin than with him. I think the Chargers made a mistake not keeping him around last year and in fact are perpetuating that mistake by not having him (or an accomplished vet NT like him) on the team now. Seeing as how the inside LBs on this team are not block-shedding tackling machines, not having a bonafide giant kickass NT who can manage double teams and keep blockers off our LBs is a mistake. I predict we will struggle against the run this season.

I said Mathews did not outplay Nix and based that on the fact that the Texans kept Nix and dumped Mathews, which usually defines the winner and loser of any competition that may have existed. If you want to define the concept of one player "outplaying" another differently, go ahead.

I do think the Texans' roster move means either 1) Nix outplayed Mathews in the eyes of the Texans, 2) the two were never in direct competition as Mathews is really a 3-4 DE that has some experience moonlighting as a NT, or 3) the Texans preferred Nix's potential to that of Mathews (even if the Texans felt that Mathews played better than Nix in the preseason--i.e., how you want to define "outplaying"). I have suggested all 3 as possibilities for the Texans' decision. If you want to take door #3 and claim that Mathews outplayed Nix by that definition of "outplaying", go ahead.

At the end of the day, the Texans wanted to keep Nix and didn't want to keep Mathews. Unless the Texans do not know how to judge players properly, we likely just signed the lesser player between the two.

Seriously, the texans kept nix therefore Mathews is worse is flawed logic.

Your assumption is that the texans never make a wrong personnel decision.

Some of the guys that argue are really saying the same thing at the end of the day. So I guess it is semantics, in some cases. Now Hank Bauer is reportedly anti-semantics, so if he is on the board, well, I think we all know what we can expect. But this all makes for good theater and great conversation among friends who root for the same team.

I think Carrethers will be coacheded into a helluva NT. Also the body type i prefer for a NT. Strong lower body and low center of gravity. Very good strength and athleticism.
