OL would slide to Boas on every single play without Mel on the other side. Joey gets more opportunities because we have Mel. At any rate, I never, NEVER, like to see them let a player go if they don't have someone better. The idea is to get better, not worse. Let me know when you have someone better, then I'll agree we should replace him.
