George 'Night of the Living Dead' Romero turned down the offer to direct episodes of The Walking Dead, claiming it was was more "soap opera" than zombie TV show.

“They asked me to do a couple of episodes of The Walking Dead but I didn’t want to be a part of it,” Romero told The Big Issue. “Basically it’s just a soap opera with a zombie occasionally. I always used the zombie as a character for satire or a political criticism and I find that missing in what’s happening now.”

Romero is commonly acknowledged to be the 'godfather' of the zombie movie, ushering the horror sub genre into mainstream consciousness through his Night of the Living Dead series.

Romero is not a good director. Have you seen his latest dead movies?

He is like the George Lucas of zombies

Greys Anatomy, 2 broke Girls, 2 and a half men...etc. All get great ratings. It doesn't make them good TV shows.

But it makes them successful regardless of critical opinion

Matters how you define success. I would say the Wire or Breaking Bad and shows like that were far more successful. Just with lower ratings. There is a lot of successful bad TV if that's how a show is measured.

If those shows were as good as they were, but no one watched and they got cancelled after the first season than they are failures.

But Romero doesn't make anything successful by any measure in several decades....no one watches, they don't make money, and they are critical failures. Even the zombie fan boys basically hate his newer stuff. I thought Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead were not as bad as people make them out to be but I am a rare exception. Survival of the Dead was utter trash.

I would think the reason Romero wouldn't do Walking Dead and is critical of it is more to do with that franchise making tons of money off zombies while he didn't make jack. Jealously is the most likely reason.

And yet walking dead wanted Romero. Why?

Because he is a legend, he created the genre.

I would need more evidence before I quite believed it as well, it may have happened or Romero could just be bullshitting or could have been an off the cuff thing. There was a period of time Romero was supposed to do the Resident Evil movie. McCoy and Telesco also asked LT to come back and play for the Bolts.....

You may be one of an elite group of people who judge the success of a tv show based on how much you like it.....

I judge it by how good or bad I think it is. That's how everyone judges shows. Unless they need other people to tell them their opinion.

They wanted Romero because they lack a certain amount credibility even with solid source material. Romero is correct that it's just a soap opera with zombies. The writing on the show is some of the worst. Especially in season 2 where it really treated the audience like idiots.

Yeah most people don't think how much they like a show is a measure of how successful it is though. That's an elite club

Completely disagree about a lack of credibility though. Kirkman is the king of the zombie genre currently (you could throw max brooks in as second) and the zombie effects are some of the greatest of the genre. They lack no credibility, none that Romero would add to. I do agree the shows writing has stumbled plenty but I think season2 overall is my favorite of the show.
