But the celebration of diversity by diversity celebrators seems to only be extended to those diversities pre-approved by the celebrators. Whoa be it unto him that makes his opinion known when it doesn't fit inside that box. There are firings and suspensions and protests and demonization. No justice, no peace! It's not then just another point-of-view, it's an outright attack. It's WRONG. There needs to be an investigation by the Thought Police and years of national re-education / psychotherapy to get us over whatever the latest injury or slight might be...no matter how unintended or innocuous it might be. A good number of people on both sides of the political spectrum in this country run around looking for ways to be offended. Then they can demonize. Then we can't talk to one another anymore. Then we can all point fingers. Yay!

Ask John Rocker. He was an idiot to be sure...but he had a right to say whatever stupid shit he wanted so long as he could deal with the repercussions in terms of denunciations. A lot of these guys don't even know what they are talking about...Kaepernick included. So run your mouth but don't be hurt when people call you out. You think you're Ali, then stand up for your principles and don't give a fuck. But that's not what's happening. Let's try to get back to the notion of 'I may not like what you say, but I will defend your right to say it.' That's really what freedom's about and it's what civility and respect mean for sorting through problems and policies. Pointless request here, but I think we all deserve better.

Anyone can deride him for his choice to not participate in the national anthem. But there is a point where it reaches a fever pitch mob mentality that smells a whole hell of a lot like fascism.

True, his right to not participate should be protected. On the other hand, all the calls against anyone against his method begins to sound a lot like totalitarianism practiced by those who mean to shut down anyone who is doesn't agree with what AFKABKR aptly calls "pre-approved" diversity. Thats just as chilling as the mob you fear, and in fact more effective at shutting down the unapproved opposition.

Does this business of profiting off tragedy occur on a mass scale in other countries?
Does the Israeli soccer league bust out a pregame Kristallnacht extravaganza?
Do Native American casinos have a Trail of Tears blowout before the big keno championship?
I wonder if, in Indonesia, the table-tennis league holds a tsunami showcase right before it opens up the beer stands and starts showing Diet Coke ads? (I don't even know if Indonesians play ping pong - I'm probably being racist.)
In my mind, if you are a religious person who had a close relationship with somebody who died in one of the September 11 attacks or somebody who served in one of the wars the U.S. launched in the War on Terror, then I get why you would want some personal memorial.
But this NFL shit where we all pretend, by watching football and eating lukewarm hot dogs, that we are patriots - fuck that. We aren't patriots - we are just people being entertained while drinking and screaming at a TV screen.
I'm sorry for all those who died due to September 11. Still - I refuse to watch any for-profit rememberance. I can't even watch the buildings fall with those poor people leaping to their deaths - it bothers me too much. I really hate 9/11 - I even hate that we gave it a shortened-nickname. What the fuck? 9/11? Who is the idiot who popularized that? It was mass murder by terrorists - a horrible tragedy, not something that should sound like a convenience store.
If we want to celebrate a day, let us dedicate the day our soldiers blasted Osama. I say we remember that day every year by shitting on a picture of his dead face while holding up our middle fingers, and, in Saudi Arabia, we erect 10,000-foot-by-10,000-foot photos of the annual Shit-On-Osama-Fest.
I agree with this... probably not the photo-shitting part, but the rest of it.

How exactly is the NFL profiting off 9/11 though? You think 9/11 remembrance sells more tickets or encourages more beer sales at the stadium? In contrast, Blaine Gabbert's backup is definitely profiting from his position. He would be nothing more than a backup QB, but his 'brand' is rising. He can now do the College Lectures for Like Minded Individuals Only And Everyone is Offensive Tour after he becomes a third stringer. He can also license a brand of pig socks and I'm sure those who are buying up his jersey will send him $27 for a pair.

Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall is out a sponsorship deal after he kneeled during the national anthem before Thursday night's game against the Carolina Panthers.

              More, please.

Patriotism is one of the NFL's big selling points. If you think about it, you would realize paying millions to Tom Brady and Ray Lewis has fuck all to do with patriotism. But "NFL equals patriotism" is a profitable pile of shit that is successfully being fed to its ever-growing American fan base.

I guess. I've never watched a game with Tom Brady or Ray Lewis or Blaine Gabbert's backup becuase the NFL is selling patriotism. Its their choice to do so, better than selling non-patriotism, but again, its not an association I make. The Padres have lots of military nights, etc. Must explain their ever-growing fan base. I have thought about it, but honestly, its the game that sells. Baseball is America's past time and does just as much as the NFL to promote patriotism, military, 9/11 etc. but isn't nearly the business the NFL has become.

Padres military nights are legit. Giving tickets to our soldiers is a good thing.

You and I have been Chargers fans for decades and love the sport for the sport. We are not good examples to prove my point
