The thing about a flag is that it is always changing and represents the current "establishment" or government of a country. Even if a flag starts out as just, if an oppressive government comes into power then that flag shifts it’s representation to it. If you follow the flag and the flag only, that can be a dangerous proposition because that means you represent and follow the system that is currently in power under it no matter who or what the consequences are.

What makes the constitution special is that it represents a set of principles, ideals and rights that do not necessarily represent a government or an establishment. They are always there. Those ideals can be oppressed or violated but they can never be changed.

Again, I think that there needs to be a distinction between the two as situations can change and have throughout history. There was a time when black people were held as slaves under that same flag while their rights under the constitution where being violated. Would you have shared the same views as the establishment then because your dedication to the flag superseded everything else including the constitution?

I love this country and the ideals behind it as well as those that serve to protect them, that is unquestionable and won't change no matter what anyone else's opinion of me is.

As far as what the Squawks are doing, that sounds fucking redick.

I'm cool with an individual like Kaepernick who feels passionate about this issue using his fame to push what he believes in.

But an entire team doing that? Come on - there is no way every Seahawk feels the same about police and our nation. That one douche who got quoted about how the Squawks do things as a team or they don't do it at all - he's being a moron. Sorry - this issue, whether you are a vet who loves the National Anthem or you are the dude who got shot by a cop while trying to help his mentally-ill patient, isn't about Seahawk-team unity. If the Seabags actually go through with what it sounds like they are going through with, I hope Green Berets show up to punch every one of them in the face. That is commercial patriotism I would pay to see.

Does the Israeli soccer league bust out a pregame holocaust extravaganza?
Do Native American casinos have a Trail of Tears blowout before the big keno championship?
In my mind, if you are a religious person who had a close relationship with somebody who died in one of the September 11 attacks or somebody who served in one of the wars the U.S. launched in the War on Terror, then I get why you would want some personal memorial.
But this NFL shit where we all pretend, because we watched on TV, that we are patriots - fuck that.
I'm sorry for all those who died due to September 11. Still - I refuse to watch any for-profit rememberance. I can't even watch the buildings fall with those poor people leaping to their deaths.
If we want to celebrate a day, let us dedicate the day our soldiers blasted Osama. I say we remember that day every year by shitting on a picture of his face, and we do it for free.
I agree with you that no one should profit off of this, but I think the NFL is doing what would be expected of them on the 15th anniversary. They would probably be criticized if they chose to do nothing.

Rats. You quoted me before I could edit everything.

You are right. The NFL would get criticized if it did nothing, but it would be doing the right thing, which, in my mind, should be more important than worries about criticism.

Perhaps the NFL could send out a press release saying it wouldn't feel right about commercializing one of the nation's greatest tragedies. That might cool off some of the knuckle draggers who populate our various media.

millionaire pussy? hahaha. When did that happen? That's funny. For the record I can be a pussy but even that label is misleading considering what I've had to deal with in my life. It's kind of relative. Mental illness and incest from Dad (and every other kind of abuse) is no cake-walk. Then add the hauntings. Yeah, no pussy here. Fucking survivor is more like it.

I have to hand it to you. You really do sound like either a Russian, Chinese, North Korean (although no one hears much of what they're saying these days) soldier that has to say only what he's been told to say...and how to think.

Why would you want to withhold someone's freedom of speech? Wouldn't that hurt the country? You know we can protest in this country. I can't figure out one good reason for giving that up. I understand you're emotional about this. I get that. But think of the bigger picture. There is a bigger picture and that is the U.S.Constitution and people's right and freedoms. We don't want to diminish those rights and freedoms because some people can't handle other people protesting against things they might hold dear on a personal level.

I'm sorry for your pain (must be my inner pussy talking) but there are bigger things to account for here.

I think the guy (and, by guy, I mean awesome dude) you responded to was talking about Kaepernick, not you.

For what it's worth, I'm a much bigger pussy than Kaepernick. There is no fucking way, even for millions of dollars, that I would be a running-quarterback in the NFL. How many times does Kaepernick get hit by defenders who are bigger than him? No way I'd do that.

Oh, and I doubt, if I were famous, I'd be sitting for the national anthem for any reason. No matter how passionate I felt about an issue (and there isn't an issue I'm really that passionate about), there is no way I'm going to purposely piss off a good chunk of the United States.

sure seems like this thread belongs in the Politics forum- cause there isn't much football content here and people arguing about what the flag means and Constitutional rights....

I was talking about Kaepernick. Pretty sure none of us are millionaires here.

If I had to call it I'd say he's the closest we have to a millionaire. But I don't know. Probably way wrong.
