Think about it like this, drew brees was good for us, but injured. He goes to new orleans with a new coach in sean payton and he looked like a completely new player.

The Beard wouldn't be in the HOF if not for Coryell

Successful: Mcnabb and Mahomes
So it is relative. Coaching matters but so does QB talent, work ethic, competitiveness, fearlessness, confidence.
With Justin Herbert this is how I view him today going into his rookie season.
Coaching: Shane Steichen and Pep Hamilton still undetermined, they have the guy with the skill set they favor, now it is watch and see. I view Anthony Lynn as a mentor and leader more than a tactician, in that role he is a strong +.
Talent: No denying Herbert has all the tools +
Work Ethic: He is a hard worker being successful on the field and with academics so gets a +
Competitiveness: He has shown he can compete but I don't see the Philip Rivers fire yet so give him a minus for now
Fearlessness: As a rookie it is normal to have some fear but he needs to get rid of it quick another minus
Confidence: TBD, needs some early success to believe he belongs. Lynn important with this

I think it was mostly Drew. Peyton helped but Drew had a huge chip on his shoulder before the injury when AJ traded for PR and had alreadystepped up his game.
Insult-Injury-Insult-Rehab sequence and Drew, who was already good became intensely focused, burningly committed to proving that AJ & the Chargers were total ass-hats for letting him leave, and he did and has done exactly that.
