Hopefully that and his previous OC experience has helped develop him.

Staley has said that he plans on taking a hand in developing an offense so that should our OC leave for another job there can be offensive consistency (citing the template of defensive guys like BB, Parcells, Dungy, etc...) so hopefully the development of this offense fully takes advantage of what we have in Herbert. Lombardi does have a lot more experience tailoring offenses to a QB this time around so here’s hoping.

Even with glass half full this isn’t a hire that has everyone jumping with joy, but hey at least we all know Staley wasn’t forced into any staff decisions as ‘reported’. Hopefully this puts the end to that tired argument for now.
Perfect post on my feelings as well. I want to see his presser and his thoughts about how he approaches the OC position this time.

Lombardi's first year in Detroit the Lions went 11-5. Then, his second season, he got fired after the team started out 1-6. Apparently, Lombardi tried to get Stafford to buy into his system of short passes and timing, and Stafford had a hard time with it. Maybe Staley helps Lombardi to adapt his system better to the players' skillsets, since Staley has a good rep for that:

The Lions have fired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and their offensive line coaches, the team announced Monday. Quarterbacks coach Jim Bob Cooter will take over as offensive coordinator.

Everyone was fine with him bringing in his offense. While there is a talent disparity between those teams and the Lions team Lombardi was on there’s also a lack of success with Daboll over a much larger body of work. Lombardi has had a lot of time to study with one of the best offensive minds in football while Daboll has spent most of his career around defensive minded HCs.

I’m not super excited by this hire but if you’re willing to give Daboll a chance running this offense I don’t think it’s out of hand to say you should be able to give Lombardi a chance.
So what...we've got Herbert so he improvised a lot with the 32nd ranked oline. Even with players getting better around him we can only get better unless he just calls bad game after bad game.

          Lombardi will either:

-Learn from that Stafford lesson in not tying to implement Saints timing system unto a QB when there's fitment issues

-Think Herbert has what it takes to actually implement the Saints timing offense

          -Or both!!

#1 thing Herbert needs to work on is short pass game to RBs and slot guys. Perhaps Lombardi helps there. Otherwise I hope he brings some Saints deep throw plays. Dude probably has a wholeplaybook on those.

I asked this question earlier, and this is because I want to educate myself: what is the Saints' system? It isn't the Shanahan system, right? So Staley went from wanting to run the McVay/Shanahan system to exactly what with Lombardi? Or does Payton with the Saints run so much different "stuff," that Lombardi could run the Shanahan system? Last question: how would the Saints system -- or whatever it is -- differ from what Steichen was running (assuming Steichen was running a modified version of the Whisenhunt offense).

It's a West Coast offense. Here's a link that explains it:

As a number of NFL squads shift their offensive focus toward the establishment of an effective ground game, the 8-2 New Orleans Saints are sticking to their guns, and they continue ...

                This looks promising,
a career OC who likely won’t leave any time soon who has a natural connection with Staley, so communication shouldn’t be an issue.
Staley has an inside man now on pro offenses and frankly I think having a Stants like offense can better utilize JHs skill as a pocket passer.

Sure. McVay and Shanahan run a west coast offense too, technically. There is an article noting that McVay's concepts are connected to Walsh. But it seems like what Payton runs is different than Shanahan and McVay. It also seems different than what Andy Reid runs. It seems like there are sub-sets or subcategories of the West Coast offense.

Agree..... at least he has worked with maybe the best offensive mind in NFL after Reid, who I would rank number 1...... hopefully alot of payton and his aggressivenessa has rubbed off on him.....

Stafford has always sucked as a QB..... at times throws a beautiful ball like Carson Palmer, but like Palmer, frequently makes horrible throws in red zone and in critical situaltions......

I think you hit the nail on the head. Herbert got a 4.0, at a credible university taking classes like Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physics. I think he can handle anything Brees can handle.
