Brown insists on playing LT and wants out of Baltimore if he cannot play LT. Williams is the epitome of a team player, not insisting on a larger role and willing to do what the team wants him to do.
Williams costs more this year, but Brown's contract is up after this year. And in an amazing coincidence Brown now insists on playing LT, a position that earns more than RT.
So, the first question is do we want Brown at all? I get that a ham sandwich is an improvement over Tevi, but Brown limits us at LT and he will undoubtedly want big LT money when his true value is only as a RT. Brown's willingness to play LT and only LT limits his value. If we draft an OT and that player is a better fit at LT than Brown, then I would want to play Brown where he best fits in the scheme and not be locked into playing him at LT without Brown throwing a hissy fit.
Would we be able to draft a LT that is better and cheaper for years than Brown will be after this year and keep Williams and our other draft pick that would, under the trade proposal you outline, be lost?
Also, players that demand to be traded are consistently valued at less than what otherwise might be their trade value. We have repeatedly seen this in trades over the years. Brown is equal to Williams in ability value, so why should our team offer any more than a straight up trade of Williams for Brown? I would say that Brown's demands and malcontent status in Baltimore at least offsets the higher salary Williams carries this year (and only this year).
The more I think about the possibility of trading for Brown, the less I like the idea.
