Another NFC general manager was pressed on the subject. His response was telling: "I checked in on Rivers. It was a quick conversation. (Chargers GM) Tom (Telesco) said he wasn't available. San Diego told me he's not going anywhere."
I quizzed another general manager, this one from the AFC, with a simple text message asking about the rumors. He provided a one-word response: "No."
No?
I asked him to expand.
"There is no chance San Diego trades Rivers. Unless everyone with that team is flat out lying. And that's not how you drum up a market. So if they are lying, then they are clueless. And I don't think that's the case."

Regardless, it's a huge number to pay a guy that would clearly not be happy. Not worth the bad publicity by itself, you could argue. Then what do you do in 2016? Just a bad situation to be in unless you are convinced you're going to win a Super Bowl in 2015-2016 and couldn't care less.
And when you consider the other option of Rivers just retiring after 2015 and us being left completely and utterly empty-handed....you can easily see how trading him now is not necessarily the end of the world.
Tell me, short of him just willingly staying in SD/LA and signing another extension, do the Chargers win in any of the other proposed scenarios? No, we come out sorely behind. I like this approach of trying to be proactive instead of just crossing our fingers that he'll stay or that the team will stay in SD. The world doesn't revolve around Philip Rivers and his 4-5 playoff record. And I don't want to be left holding our dicks if there is even a decent chance he is no longer on the team after 2015.

Sounds like Rivers and Sexton have made it clear he wants out. Chargers have said no, but are exploring it knowing Titans are interested.

@ChrisHansenNFL How do you know Rivers and Sexton have made clear? Is that speculation or are you reporting that as news?
Christopher Hansen @ChrisHansenNFL 14m14 minutes ago
@RichMiron I'm not reporting anything.
what some people are casually ignoring is just how bad of a team the titans are. You think Rivers would be happy to play there just because its closer to where he's from?? If you think that then you obviously have no clue what kind of competitor he is.
I agree. It is widely considered one of, if not the least talented roster in the league.
Philip Rivers - QB - Chargers
According to Bleacher Report's Jason Cole, Philip Rivers believes the Chargers are "not going to pay him."
In other words, Rivers forcing his way out of San Diego isn't just about relocation fears. Per Cole, the Chargers are "extraordinarily concerned" about Rivers' physical condition, as well, and will most likely package him in a deal for the Titans' No. 2 overall pick. Cole reports that Rivers would "love" to play out his career for the Titans and ex-Chargers OC Ken Whisenhunt. The smoke continues to build toward a Bolts/Titans blockbuster, but it doesn't yet appear inevitable.

If it happens it will be right after Tampa takes Winston - not a minute sooner.
Titans could also be throwing out smoke in order to jack up their trade offers from somebody else.
Prediction: Correct: Chargers CI fails miserably. Fail: Team stays in San Diego until their lease runs out in 2020. (without getting new deal done by then) . Sig Bet WIN: The Chargers will file for relocation on January 15.
With Winston getting sued today and the allegation that a second woman was also assaulted, I wonder if the Bucs really want the risk and circus that will surround Winston.
