Originally posted by SDfan View Postafter the season, both Rivers and the team admitted he had bulging/ruptured disc(s) in his lower back and the fear during the season was there would be nerve problems in his legs if they couldn't manage it well enough. Go back and search it out for yourself, you'll see it was discussed. We talked about it quite a bit on this board as myself and other have similar disc problems. Its guaranteed that ANY active male adult in their 30s will have arthritis- even if it hasn't been diagnosed and giving you problems- yet. Its also guaranteed gravity takes its toll on your skeleton with age and Arthritis does not get better, it only gets worse with age. Put all that together and Rivers (like many of us) has a degenerative back condition that will not get better (can only be managed) and he has a high risk occupation for hurting it again and if it starts affecting his peripheral nerves to his legs- his career is probably done.
maybe our resident board Drs can weigh in on this, or at least the skeletal Arthritis part so you don't have to just take my word for it.
However, he didnt need surgery which is a good sign. Tony Romo had that issue and did have suregry and he came back and had a great season last year. He is 35. If Rivers needs relief from a bulging disk on his nerves , that is where the surgery comes in to play. The fact he didnt need it is good news though i dont know how they treat a bulging disk asside from surgery since i dont have one of those. Athletes sure seem to get better care from their Dr's than we do.

I am inferring he doesn't believe the state of the team is shaping up to his liking. If true, nowhere in there is misdirection or lying. He's simply reacting to what he sees and is saying, possibly truthfully, that he might not re-sign. Why might he not want to re-sign? Because he's not keen on how the team is shaping up. How again does this contradict the straight shooter persona? I guess if you believe he intends to re-sign no matter what and is manipulating the situation, then he's being insincere. But that's your inference and not necessarily truth.
If Rivers is dissatisfied with the organization, it didn't start this offseason. That's my point. Rivers has always been a Chargers loyalist. He's always struck me as a guy that wants to stay here, win a ring and finish his career as a Charger. That's doesn't just evaporate over a tough season littered with injuries that likely contributed to his own, an empty threat to move to LA to get SD off the dime and a free agency period that didn't result in 5 new linemen and $250M in outlays for new guys. I don't think he's stupid. And I don't think he's that shallow. Now if there are other things going on at Chargers Park that I'm not aware of (like the AJ-Marty stuff), thats a different story. The developments with Weddle may indicate that. But it sure doesn't seem like the org they set up under TT is inclined that way.
On a sidenote, Dean and Alex have presided over some extremely poor organizational setups that always seem to result in dysfunction, so I don't put that past them. But for now, we don't know anything about that. What we do know is that Rivers has power in the situation and he's using it to influence it (as I have said since the outset), but there is nothing so far that suggest to me that he is eager to leave SD.Last edited by ArtistFormerlyKnownAsBKR; 04-21-2015, 01:50 PM.

newest Rivers rumors:
Not to mention the franchise tag for the next two years. It's in his and the chargers best interest to get an extension done. Telesco in that interview said they still might get something done before the season and that was after rivers said what he said. Who knows, if we draft a running back like Gordon or gurley rivers might get excited. Things change.
