Painful to watch Trey Lance on the niners. Maybe with a better oline he might be a bit better but he is really slow in decision making and takes too much time getting rid of the ball. Even Sam Darnold looks light years ahead of him at this point in time. I get the feeling this will be the last time the 49ers use three first round picks on a player for a long time.

Wasn't Trey Lance unwatchable? His decision-making ability is nonexistent, Sam Darnold is much, much further along in the process of reclamation of a franchise QB. The 3rd overall pick in the 2021 draft is a bust and they can replace him with the 3rd overall choice of the 2018 draft.

If the 49ers had stood pat in the 2021 draft (not traded up for Lance) they could've drafted Micah Parsons or Rashawn Slater.

It's an interesting point. I believe that axiom that the late Joel Buschbaum claimed, that missing on a franchise QB can set a franchise back 5 years. The 49ers missed on a franchise QB and still made the NFC Championship game and I believe they'll make it back again this season. My conclusion is the front office is so good with the rest of their picks, they can afford to hit-and-miss on a franchise QB.

I think the 49ers were one of the first franchise to dodge that pitfall.

The apocalypse behind utterly whiffing on a first round QB has been lessened a bit by the rookie wage scale after Bradford got his mega contract despite never stepping on a professional football field. The Niner's pick of Trey Lance was mostly disastrous because of the missed opportunities to pick helpful players with the picks that went into trading up for him. In ye olde days of a bit more than decade ago, they'd also be on the hook for a looot of cap space taken up by such a disappointment.
