The missing ingredient was a coach. With McCoy gone, Spanos should have hired a coach who could coach the team as it was then.

Instead, the Chargers got Anthony Lynn who wanted to tear the team down. Then he wanted to rebuild into a run-first team, which he was capable of coaching.

This is the kind of idiotic decisionin the front office that will continue to undermine the Chargers
Yep, you just can't fix that kind of stupid. The Spanos kind..

14-2 season, fire head coach Marty - hire Norv, the proven loser. Did not end well.
Norv out, hire Mccoy, no experience as a head coach, a GM Tom Telesco who is still here to this day.. We know where this took us.

Mccoy out, LA in, hire Lynn, RB coach with virtually no experience as a head coach... Yes, this is how spanos try to "fight for LA"? Lol

Having hired 3 losers in a row now, Lynn fired after Herbert's first year.. Who does spanos bring in - an experiment again - the boy wonder stayley with no experience as head coach.

The result? Herbert now going into his 3rd year as starting qb with no playoff experience so far.

To be fair to stayley, even though he made some really boneheaded coaching decisions, we did see a big improvement in the oline this year and I do not believe it was because of TT (failed to build and or buy a sufficient oline for many years). Special teams also showed some improvement. So I'll give stayley
the benefit of the doubt there since those areas improved and it's only his first year.

But if we don't see a huge improvement in the defense this coming year by this "defensive genius stayley" , I think Herbert's career will go to waste under the Spanos clan in the end just as it happened to many other players.

The Rams have already been to a Super Bowl since moving back to LA. This is their second. The first didn’t do a whole heck of a lot for their fan base as we saw when SF came to town

            I'll try...

Good job Bengals front office for being worse than Telesco ever has been to earn the number 1 overall pick in the luckiest draft where the most obvious pick ever was bow-wrapped for them.
            Chargers vs. Everyone

Go back and read the draft thread when Herbert "dropped" in our lap. There were an awful lot of people here who thought it was a terrible mistake to take him and predicted he'd be a bust. Hardly the slam dunk that hindsight gives people.

These are the Chargers we're talking about.

Foolhardy to predict or guarantee playoffs.

They did bolster the roster to support him. They signed 3 OL FAs, drafted two more OL players (including one in the first round), drafted a WR, and drafted a RB. That is a lot of support.

They let players walk that were not deemed to be a good fit in Staley's system or who they believed were overvalued. Perryman is a true hammer, but he is not great in pass coverage. Jenkins is better than Adderley, but only marginally so and certainly not by as much as the large salary difference between the players would suggest. Henry is marginally better than Cook, but Cook was more affordable and familiar with the offensive system.

They are projected to receive compensatory picks for Taylor, Perryman, Feeney and Tevi. Perryman is the only useful player in that group, but was not, as noted above, a good system fit.

Now, the team has cap space and a good allotment of draft picks even though the compensatory picks are late picks. Instead of trying to sign the top UDFAs, now the team can just draft them. Because of that, I think the picks are far from useless.

Yes, the Bengals got Burrow to the Super Bowl by getting their playoff opponents to crap the bed in the divisional and conference championship rounds.
