They might as well have put "Interim" into his title. I really think they only retained him so he can occupy the space while they prepare for their move to LA.
Fire McCoy!

J and D Spanos could do the behind the back stab by promising a potential OC with the first shot at being the HC when they ultimately fire McCoy. I'm thinking that they have Whisenhunt in mind for that. Remember all that talk about John Pagano deserving a shot at being an HC? It's tough to sell a 4-12 record, no matter whose fault, to a fan base that has a better record, and thus his only shot may be the Cleveland Browns, who are looking for a pliable, accepting and "progressive minded" HC as they start with the sabermetrics experiment in personnel decisions.

who would be the progressive minded analytics types? I keep hearing that Cleveland has a list of candidates for coaching that are basically traditional coaches. Is that going to help?
Plus the whole statistics to football relationship is dubious at best. The statistics that are really needed are not being collected, the box scores are basically useless for analytics. Plus, if you want to be really analytical, why use statistics? Breaking down film and using systematic study are similar the the deterministic methods used by scientists. Scientists (or at least I do) design studies with a problem in mind, then pick the tools to do the study that will be most revealing. The current paper I am writing for a conference next week doesn't have any statistics in it, and of all my colleagues, we all agree that a statistical analysis would not give anything useful about the event. You pick the tools to fit the problems you have, not find the tool and try to make the problems fit the tools. Hiring an analytic's guy first is probably the wrong way to approach the problem.
