Offense is one-dimensional, and opposing teams already know it. Now with Slater possibly out, I'd just assume throw the 2nd & 3rd stringers out there for the next few games.
Offseason signature space for rent. Inquire within.
Whether Herbert plays or doesn’t play it’s going to be a grind it out on the ground affair. Jk Scott and our defense will have to have great days today
To win today, we really needed the D to step up and force a couple of turnovers or at least make Lawrence uncomfortable. Instead we had zero turnovers, Lawrence passed 39 times and we got zero sacks and only 2 QB hits. Yes, they got winded by being out there so much but to give up scores on 7 straight drives (sans the kneel down) is just beyond pathetic.
And the O, while Herbert showed toughness, we really needed to establish the running game. And our RBs ran 11 times for 19 yards.
Losing Slater and Bosa for any length of time and this season could get even uglier.
I completely disagree with the "establish the running game" nonsense. We need to embrace the fact that we are not a good running team and only use the running game to cross up defenses. In fact, trying to run the ball in predictable running situations and on first downs have been among the worst things that Lombardi has done this year. We absolutely cannot run the ball in any short yardage situations as we have repeatedly proven, including multiple times today.
The other big problem, of course, is the refusal to throw the ball downfield until we are well behind. We should be attacking on offense and not throwing so many stupid useless short passes into the teeth of the defense because everyone has figured out that when you only throw the ball more than 17 yards downfield twice on 48 passes, every pass is very likely to be short.
On the other hand, when we threw deep to Guyton, it worked immediately. And when we allowed Herbert to hold the ball and look downfield so that the short zones cleared out, the dump off passes to Ekeler were suddenly there. Imagine that. The same defender cannot be in two different vertical zones, so if the QB waits and then throws into the flat, the play can actually produce positive yardage. And that approach works better than having every receiver run a short route and wondering why nothing is open and why quick passes to the flat are not working.
If we miss the playoffs again, Telesco has to go. The team is always mediocre under him.
That won't happen. Team ownership doesn't give a rat's ass about winning; just making a profit. As long as they're on the plus side of the ledger, nothing else matters. The organization stinks at the top. We shouldn't be surprised that everything below reflects that stench.
By the way, I just looked at the Jags' schedule: they could easily be 7-2 heading into Week #10 against KC. Chargers? Based on how we played today, I'd be surprised if we won 3 games this year.
