“A blunt force to the chest in a precise moment in the heart's electrical cycle can cause the heart to stop. It is a rare injury known as “commotio cordis,” but it is the second most common cause of cardiac death among U.S. athletes, according to a 2009 study in Sports Health.”
I saw an interesting thought from a former linebacker. Because they can’t lower their heads to tackle anymore, they are standing higher and giving up their chests.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some Charger memories to suppress.

I would retire too, but according to cardiologists, anyones heart can stop if you receive a blow to that area at a certain timing of the heartbeat.

But here’s a question to ponder. If you had this injury and recovered would you play NFL football again or retire?
        Play ball !

        Why ?

It takes freakish timing for this to happen to anyone by my reads.

It's like getting hit by lightning and attacked by a pregnant bear under a house later in the day type odds of happening again.

So if you have been hit by lightning and attacked by a pregnant bear under a house.....like I was in the same day.

Chances are good that will not happen again.

I did not get hit by lightning but the pregnant bear part is true. I had to embellish for dramatic effect.

        Go for it.

        Play ball !!

First concern is that he can breathe on his own once they take him out of induced coma and off ventilator..so he can live.

Second is that he doesnt have brain damage due to lack of oxygen for too long

Playing football again is not a concern right now.

You are stating the obvious first steps but that was not the question.

Let me cut and paste the question .....

"If you had this injury and recovered would you play NFL football again or retire?"

If you RECOVERED would you play again ?

Assuming its a complete recovery my answer stays the same.

              Play ball.

                Ok fair

                Not sure I would.

Info just came out they had to resuscitate him twice, once on the field, and then again at the hospital. Health has to come first. It is just hard to contemplate your question at the moment.

Hamlin's fundraiser is OVER $5 million dollars at this point. I hope that will put a smile on his face in the coming days.

                          Latest update, according to family.

I'm actually proud of you guys. Not just here, the entire NFL fanbase for pulling together for this guy.
